Caulfield Races Betting Preview – January 30, 2021
Caulfield is set to host its second meeting in five days when a nine-race card is set down for judgement on Saturday afternoon. Two exciting Group 3 races, Chairmans Stakes and Manfred Stakes are set to race throughout the nine race card. With plenty of rain forecasted for the 24 hours leading up to the meeting, we may see a downgrade from the original Good 4 track rating. The rail is out 9m, and it is usually no disadvantage to be up on speed at Caulfield on rain-affected days with the rail out 6m+. The first at Caulfield is set to jump at 12:55pm AEDT.
Best Bet: Race 1 – Sensationalisation #3
The Mick Price-trained Sensationalisation has begun her career in fine form albeit with only one victory to her name. She has yet to finish worse than third in any of her five career starts and looks well placed in a small field in the opener at Caulfield on Saturday. With 100m to go in her last-start second at track and distance, she genuinely looked to have the win sewn up but was swamped in the shadows of the winning post. From barrier six Michael Walker will take her to the rear of the field, and with a small field of seven she should not be too far from the speed when cornering. With a slick turn of foot she should be too good for this field.

It will be handlebars down for the Lindsey Smith-trained Elderflower, who is coming off two consecutive victories including a speedy win at Moonee Valley on January 22. The four-year-old mare is clearly in a rich vein of form, and the burgeoning partnership with Campbell Rawiller looks primed to bring up a hat-trick of wins. From barrier seven expect Rawiller Jr to send her forward and prove too hard to catch in the opening leg of the quaddie.

Matt Laurie sent his five-year-old mare Maximak up to Queensland recently, and it proved to be a good move with a fourth-place finish at Eagle Farm on Boxing Day and a good win at Sunshine Coast on January 10. She comes back to Melbourne and to the 1400m, where she has only finished out of the top three once in eight starts at the distance. If the rain does arrive she will be hard to beat having won four races from nine stars on rain-affected going.
