Jamie Kah may be Melbourne’s leading rider, but those old connections are still paying off following the win of the now South Australian-based Second Slip (NZ) (Alamosa) scoring at Sandown on Saturday.
A former premiership winner in SA, Kah has now won seven races from her past 20 for Adelaide-based trainer Will Clarken, who identified the 0-78 ratings race at Sandown as being ideal for the former Kiwi galloper as he would come in with a lower weight despite being eligible for weaker races.
Punters were more than aware of the trainer-jockey combination and backed Second Slip into $3.50 favourite at just his second Australian start following a winning debut at Murray Bridge earlier this month.
The son of Alamosa sat second behind the leader Imperial Lad (All Too Hard) and after running him down scored by three quarters of a length from Triton Rising (Sebring) with the same margin to Imperial Lad ($4).
Kah said more was to come from the horse.
“It’s a nice horse he’s (Clarken) found and I’m glad he brought it him over for me to win on,” Kah said of her 48th Melbourne winner for the season.
“He’s very big and raw and didn’t know what he was doing.
“He is probably better ridden a place further back but at the minute he’s probably a bit too aggressive to do that.
“There’s lots of upside with this boy and once the penny drops and he works it out, I think he’s going to be a really nice horse going forward.”
Second Slip won two of his 12 starts in New Zealand when trained by Kevin Grey before being sold in to the Clarken stable where he is unbeaten in two runs.
