Geelong hosts one of two Victorian race meetings on Sunday afternoon where an eight race card is set to be run and won. Geelong will be graced with clear skies on Sunday with a scorching summer day predicted. The track is rated a Good 4, but we will see that upgraded to a Good 3 at some point with the hot conditions. With the rail in the true position, we are set for a cracking day of racing in Geelong. The first at Geelong is set to jump at 1:20pm AEDT.
Best Bet: Race 6 #6 Yulong Island @ $2.00
The Matt Laurie trained Yulong Island looks to be the best bet on the Geelong card on Sunday afternoon, and will look to right any wrongs he displayed at Yarra Valley on December 29 when finishing third as a $1.45 favourite. From barrier 10, Ethan Brown should take Yulong Island to the front here and be hard to go past at any stage. His win two starts back at Yarra Valley saw him break his maiden in fine style, and with a bit of luck he will bounce back and prove too hard to catch in the second leg of the Geelong quaddie.
Next Best: Race 8 #12 River Twain @ $5.00
Having been scratched from the Sandown Lakeside card on January 20, the Mick Price trained River Twain looks the best way “out” in the last race on the Geelong card. We were with him on Wednesday prior to his scratching, and he returns to the track where he brought up his sole career victory. He seemingly runs his best races when he is allowed to gallop freely out in front and from barrier four Michael Walker should have no issue in getting him to the front. He’s had two runner up performances from three attempts at 1100m, and we expect River Twain to go one better in the final leg of the Geelong quaddie.
Best Value: Race 1 #1 Awkward @ $6.50W
The Godolphin trained Awkward resumed fairly behind Yulong Island at Yarra Valley on December 18, but she looked to be short of a gallop and will only benefit from that run for her effort here at Geelong. In her juvenile campaign during the winter she showed there was a bit of potential there when continually running into the minor money but failing to go on with the job at any point. She shouldn’t be a maiden for much longer and with Damien Oliver hopping on board for the first time, he will settle her just off the speed and prove hard to hold out in the opener at a nice each-way price.
