Australian greyhound racing has a new ‘sprinting sharpshooter’ – Tiggerlong Tonk.
Trained by Correy Grenfell, Tiggerlong Tonk ‘shot the lights out’, setting a race record in tonight’s Group 3 Shootout (515m) at Sandown.
The outsider in the $25,000 winner-take-all four-dog match race, Tiggerlong Tonk ($6.50) outgunned Shima Shine ($2.40F) by 1.5L, with Christo Bale ($4.60) a further 1L away third in a sizzling 29.03sec. Hard Style Rico ($2.50) finished fourth.
Tiggerlong Tonk gave Grenfell his second Shootout, having scored with Orson Allen in 2018, and became the 10th winner from Box 5 since the race’s inception in 1998.
Shootout night was the third of five nights of racing across The Meadows and Sandown Park which form Victorian greyhound racing’s inaugural Metropolitan Festival of Racing, where almost $2 million in prize money is being distributed, culminating in the $630,000 TAB Melbourne Cup on Friday 27 November.
