Harness racing’s annual awards will be held this year, and be open to everyone in the industry, but it will not be like previous events.
With COVID-19 forcing the 2019-20 season to be drastically different it’s been decided the Harness Racing New Zealand Premiership Awards, brought to you by New Zealand Bloodstock Standardbred, will reflect that.
Five awards will be announced at Spectators Bar and Bistro at Addington Raceway from 7-9 pm on August 10. They will go to the leading driver, trainer, and junior as well as leading UDR junior (strike-rate), and the Best Moment of the Season (People’s Choice). There won’t be any horse awards as such because the pandemic forced the postponement of many of the season’s feature races.
The two-hour event is open to all though those attending will need to register with Courtney Clarke (courtney@hrnz.co.nz) for catering purposes. Wine, beer and finger food will be supplied from 7 -8pm, followed by a cash bar.
“The HRNZ Board and management think this is the best solution”,” said HRNZ Chair Ken Spicer, “we will reward the best of the best in our industry but we have to take into account it’s been a season like none other.”
“We are also conscious that this is not the time to spend a lot of money on a traditional awards evening. We trust everyone in the harness racing industry will understand that.”
“It is hoped to be business as usual next season “
