Houdini Boy has quickly made a name for himself as an unreliable beginner, but he is one of the most exciting greyhounds in Victoria nonetheless.
After just six starts in his career for three wins, he lines up in his biggest test to date, the $20,000 to-the-winner Trio’s Winter Cup on Saturday night (race 6 at 6.19pm).
Last week in a Winter Cup heat, Houdini Boy shocked onlookers and his trainer Kel Greenough when he began midfield from box one.
From there he encountered all sorts of interference before flashing home to run 2nd and qualify for the final.
“I absolutely love the dog but he is a bit of a waste over the sprint, so I am hoping we can get him over more ground because he is very strong,” Greenough said.
“His heat run was the best he ever begun, but he lost five lengths when he tried to push up.”
“It is hard to be too confident when he falls out of the boxes most of the time, but he has a big motor.”
Houdini Boy is jumping from box four in the final with The Watchdog marking him as a $7.50 chance.
The favourite to take out the Winter Cup is the inform Yozo Bale (box six), who is chasing his fourth consecutive victory.
