By Jonny Turner Expect to see Mid Canterbury trainers Brent and Tim White line up a strong team at Winton on Saturday, rain, hail or shine. The White stable took three runners south on Friday, making it across floodwaters while Southland was in a state of emergency. While heavy downpours and road closures put Saturday’s meeting in some doubt, a track inspection and the reopening of roads has meant the meeting will be largely unaffected by the recent wild weather. Winton races to go ahead as planned
Saturday’s Winton Harness Racing Club meeting will go ahead as planned, despite this week’s adverse weather in the deep south. There’s been massive rainfall in recent days, with a state of emergency declared in Southland and parts of Otago. Queenstown for instance had its wettest 24 hours (87mm) this century. An inspection has been made of the track, and it has been given the all clear by the Racing Integrity Board (RIB) who have stated it is in a good condition. But there are a number of road closures throughout…
Cole looking forward to testing Oneira over further ground
Matamata trainer Cody Cole is looking forward to testing his talented filly Oneira over more ground. He has been delighted with her progress over the shorter trips and particularly her last-start effort to finish third in the Gr.3 Gold Trail Stakes (1200m) under jockey Ryan Elliot at Hastings. “It is typically a good form race and is one of the top three-year-old races for fillies in the spring,” he said. “She did really well and with a little bit more easing of the ground she could have finished a bit…
Southland back in action
Many Southland trainers were itching to get back racing at Gore on Friday, but they have had to be a little more patient, with the severe weather forecast for the region resulting in the meeting being transferred to Sunday. It has been a long winter for trainers in the deep south, and Ascot Park conditioner Sally McKay is particularly looking forward to its return after its winter hiatus in the region. “I can’t wait, it has been a long time coming, so I am thrilled to bits,” she said. McKay…

Now, a week later, one of Queensland’s best has been given the flick. The old saying “the game’s the game” may stand true for some, but recently it is just taking the proverbial. James Orman is desperately unlucky All eyes were on the Queenslander Antino in The Sofitel at Flemington last Saturday.…
