Peter Baken – one of harness racing’s more colourful characters

By Rob Courtney Every sport has its personalities and one of the most identifiable figures in Canterbury harness racing is (and has been for sometime) Peter Baken, known to many across the country as ‘rabbit’. From administrators, trainers and drivers to fellow owners, there wouldn’t be many harness enthusiasts who didn’t recognise Baken with his dapper wardrobe and immaculate accessories including ‘the hat’. One only has to spend time in the company of the man to sense his passion and commitment to harness racing and his energy levels and…

BYO change welcomed by racing clubs

Small harness racing clubs are welcoming a recent change to the country’s drinking laws. The Sale and Supply of Alcohol (Exemption for Race Meetings) Amendment Bill passed its third reading in Parliament last week. “It will mean race-goers and punters can take a bottle of wine or beer to the races at clubs with three or fewer meetings in a calendar year,” says the Bill’s backer, National’s Racing spokesperson and Rangitikei MP Ian McKelvie. “This Bill eliminates any ambiguity about the legality of BYO at race meetings.” “Rural clubs in…

Group Two winner retired

Trainers Shaun and Emma Clotworthy have called time on their outstanding money-spinner Justacanta (NZ) (Per Incanto). “He’s been retired, he’s getting on a bit now and he’s done a great job for us and wasn’t an expensive buy off gavelhouse.com,” Shaun Clotworthy said. The now nine-year-old won three races from David Greene’s stable before he was offered via the online platform in 2019 and the son of Per Incanto sold for $6,000 to an ownership group, which included Clotworthy’s wife Emma. He doubled his winning tally from his new quarters…

The Proisir four-year-old is open to improvement over ground following an unplaced first-up effort at Doomben and then finished in behind the major players in the Listed The Wayne Wilson (1600m) at Eagle Farm last weekend. “He’s going to back up in the Cup and he should run well again from a good gate of seven,” said Andrew Scott, who trains…

Veteran Gippsland breeders Ian and Maureen Brown have waited a lifetime for home grown sprint sensation Rejuvenate, favourite for Friday night’s Listed $110,000 Sportsbet Pink Diamond Champion Sprinter final (460m) at Warragul. Brilliant winner of 18 of his 23 starts, Rejuvenate (box 3) sits atop Sportsbet’s Champion Sprinter market at $2.70. Patience is a virtue – especially so in racing – and Rejuvenate is the culmination of a dream half a century in the making for the Loch-based Browns. “It’s a bit late in life but he’s the best dog…
