Big query on Big Energy

After Big Energy exploded into Sandown Park’s exclusive ‘sub-29’ club when clocking a scintillating 28.93sec on April 6, the Group 1 Harrison-Dawson at the same venue seemed a logical next step. But ever the realist, champion trainer Kel Greenough chose to bypass the Harrison-Dawson heats and will instead head to The Meadows on Saturday night, where Big Energy makes his debut at the track in race 4 at 7.27pm. Big Energy (box 3) dominates Sportsbet’s market at $1.70, however Greenough isn’t yet completely sold on the boom WA import, despite…

Greyhounds, frocks and Dame Edna

1950s Melbourne, at face value, was a little dull. Men had returned from the war, and women had returned to the kitchen, providing the late great comedian and satirist Barry Humphries with marvellous inspiration for his character, housewife, Dame Edna Everage. However, during the 1950s not all Melbourne housewives were created equal.  One such woman was Doris May Kelly. As a housewife, in the respectable Melbourne suburb of Camberwell, Doris was also a highly sought-after dressmaker, with clients including Barry Humphries’ mother. By 1950s standards, such polite acclaim should surely have…

Berger keeps racking up the wins

By Michael Guerin Mike Berger may joke these days about his age but that experience is helping him still train plenty of winners with his small team. Berger captured the first race at Cambridge on Thursday night when trotter Quik Sharnie made it two wins on end in the hands of Ben Butcher, downing leader Del Shannon via the passing lane. It was his seventh training success this year. But the Waikato trainer wasn’t there to see the win, watching from Canterbury where he is campaigning Cos I Can in…

Triple G’s bid to tip up the hotpot in the Sires’ Stakes Final

By Michael Guerin John Dunn admits he and Triple G probably can’t beat hot favourite Don’t Stop Dreaming in tonight’s Garrards $150,000 Sires’ Stakes Final but he still has to have a plan to try. And for Dunn that plan means trying to get in front of the star colt and stay there. Don’t Stop Dreaming dominated many of tonight’s rivals in a heat of this series last Friday and moved into red hot territory when arch rival Merlin was scratched from tonight’s 1980m race with a hoof abscess. That…

Conghua stables for Richards and Ng

The Hong Kong Jockey Club announced on Wednesday that trainers Jamie Richards and Pierre Ng will be allocated stables at Conghua Racecourse (Mainland China) in the latest implementation phase of its dual-site operation. Meanwhile, trainer Me Tsui will cease dual-site operations from 1 June, 2023, continuing to train only at Sha Tin. Hong Kong trainers based solely at Sha Tin have a stable…

The John O’Shea-trained Waihaha Falls is aiming to land a spot in the Gr.1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) when he contests the Listed Luskin Star Stakes (1300m) at Scone on Saturday. Raced by Waikato Stud’s Mark and Garry Chittick in conjunction with Hawke’s Bay trainer Guy Lowry, the five-year-old son of Sacred Falls has won four of his 14 starts with a further four placings. A last-start runner-up in the Gr.3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m), Waihaha Falls will have the services of Chad Schofield and will jump from barrier 14 on…

The Intimidator bound for Hong Kong

Quality three-year-old The Intimidator (Toronado) has been sold and will do his future racing in Hong Kong. The Toronado gelding won three of his eight starts from Andrew Forsman’s stable, including the Listed Mufhasa Stakes (1400m) and placed in both the Gr.3 Bonecrusher Stakes (1400m) and the Listed Uncle Remus Stakes (1400m). He made his final New Zealand appearance when fifth in the Gr.1 Levin Classic (1600m) before he was purchased by Hong Kong interests in a deal brokered by Waikato bloodstock agent Stuart Hale. “It does get harder when…
