The son of Redwood finished a gallant fourth in Saturday’s Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) with the combination of an outside gate and a heavily rain-affected track doing him no favours. “Hugh (Bowman, jockey) said his…

He was suffering from Lewy body dementia (a disease associated with abnormal deposits of a protein in the brain) and contracted an uncontrollable infection. His son, and ‘shadow’, Darren, who trained Bombastic Shiraz, paid an emotional tribute to his father. “He got on well with everyone; he was that sort of guy…

Mustang Valley returns home to Group One target

The Andrew Forsman-trained Mustang Valley (NZ) (Vanbrugh) was on a plane back to New Zealand on Sunday after an excellent run for fifth in the Gr.1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick. The four-year-old daughter of Vanbrugh was shuffled back to last on the fence rounding the home bend, but charged home once a run appeared and was a little unlucky not to fill a minor placing behind fellow Kiwi-bred Mr Brightside (NZ) (Bullbars). “It was a very good run. It is hard to get back in such a big field…

Staphanos success celebrated in US

Luigi Muollo wasn’t able to be trackside at Awapuni to celebrate the victory of Pignan (NZ) (Staphanos), instead keeping a close watch on his sire Staphanos’ poster girl from afar. The Novara Park principal is in the United States with family and tuned in to view the major first crop success for the stallion when the filly bagged top honours in the Gr.1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m). “I’ve got four sons and my eldest one Antonio, who’s 16, is at a high level at soccer and been scouted to…

Betterzippit worked to the front and sailed away to win by 13.7m in a 1min48.6sec mile – that’s 0.2sec faster than Catch A Wave went to win last month’s Miracle Mile. Grimson didn’t hide his confidence in…

Southern filly favourite in Addington Group 3

By Jonny Turner Always Ticking heads north seeking due reward in the Group 3 Leonard Memorial Stakes at Addington on Sunday. The Brett Gray trained filly brings exposed form to the fillies feature having produced two seconds to the smart Flying Ellie in her two career starts in Southland. Only greenness has stopped Always Ticking doing better for her owners Robert and Sharon Symon, who purchased the filly out of Canterbury recently. “Her greenness has cost her a little bit,” Gray said. “When we bought her we knew that she…
