Mitchell had been on the club’s committee since 1996 and his ascension to general manager was somewhat by accident. “I’d…

Zedstar gearing up for the ‘Bool

The time-honoured Warrnambool May Carnival is only five weeks away and those with jumpers are gearing up for the big three-day event. But getting the right program for their horse can be a problem as trainer Brett Scott found on the weekend. Scott, who needs no introduction to the jump’s fraternity, especially at Warrnambool, has Zedstar (NZ) (Zed) aimed at the Brierly Steeplechase on May 2 and the Grand Annual Steeplechase two days later. Zedstar was to have a conditioning run at the picnic meeting at Healesville on Saturday over…

Mr Brightside draws well for Doncaster defence

He had to contend with barrier 18 when saluting in last year’s Doncaster Mile at Royal Randwick but defending champion Mr Brightside (NZ) (Bullbars) has fared much better drawing gate two of 24 in this year’s edition of the A$4 million feature. The son of Bullbars, and already winner of over A$5.8 million in earnings, has firmed from $6 into $5 after lobbing with the favourable starting position whilst the other fancied runners haven’t been so fortunate. Chris Waller’s Fangirl (Sebring) ($6 out to $7) will have to navigate from…

After three wins in succession to start his career, Trobriand has played second-fiddle to unbeaten stablemate Tokyo Tycoon (NZ) (Satono Aladdin) in his past two outings. The son of Kermadec finished third in the Karaka Million 2YO (1200m) and was…

Kersley gunning for Kiwi Group One

Fred Kersley will tick New Zealand off his bucket list this weekend when he fulfils a long-held ambition to ride here. The Melbourne-based jockey has jumped at the opportunity to travel outside of Australia for the first time, enticed by a book of mounts at Awapuni on Saturday that includes last-start winner Aprilia in the Gr.1 Courtesy Ford Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m). The U S Navy Flag filly is trained by Andrew Forsman, whose invitation to partner the two-year-old was quickly accepted by Kersley. “I’ve been pretty keen to…
