Team Teal gears up for big final push

With just over a week to go, the Teal Pants campaign is proving a major success. So far there have been 58 wins by Team Teal drivers, five more than for 2022, with the total raised approaching $22,000. Money is raised for the Teal Pants campaign every time a female driver, wearing teal pants, wins a race, with Harness Racing New Zealand ($100), clubs ($100), individual sponsors and others all contributing to the cause. All money goes towards ovarian cancer research. This is the sixth time it’s been held in…

Industry Update from John Coulam, HRNZ Chair

The HRNZ mission is “To Champion the sport, celebrate the participants and have the horse at the heart of everything we do”. Congratulations to all that are recognized by their peers and to the owners and connections of the horses we acknowledge at these awards. Recipients of awards at each event will be published on the HRNZ website. As a sport, we continue to…

Purton to partner Andalus in Australian Derby

Hong Kong Champion jockey Zac Purton is playing a pivotal role in the fortunes of Kiwi runners in this year’s Sydney Autumn Carnival. Last Saturday he upset the applecart when driving late with Artorius to nab the Mark Walker-trained Imperatriz on the line to win the Gr.1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Randwick. He will be on the other side of the coin with Kiwis next month after accepting the ride on Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) runner-up Andalus in the Gr.1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on April 1. There…

Tulsi takes aim at leading juvenile contests

Johno Benner is looking forward to taking on leading juvenile Tokyo Tycoon (NZ) (Satono Aladdin) with his lightly-raced filly Tulsi (The Autumn Sun), even though he’s sure she will be better at three. Benner, who trains at Otaki with Hollie Wynyard, is racing Tulsi in both New Zealand’s top juvenile races, starting on Saturday with the Gr.1 Sistema Stakes (1200m) at Pukekohe. Tokyo Tycoon will be a very short-priced favourite after four victories in as many starts, including the Doubletree by Hilton Karaka Million 2YO (1200m) and the Gr.3 Matamata…

Auckland Cup dream back on with Dunhill

Dunhill will contest the Group 2 Auckland Cup (3200m) at Pukekohe on Saturday. Photo: Race Images South The dream of winning the Group 2 Auckland Cup (3200m) is back on with Southland stayer Dunhill. Originally entered for Saturday’s $500,000 staying feature at Pukekohe, the son of Pins hit a rough patch with a few ailments which resulted in co-trainer and part-owner Kelvin Tyler withdrawing the five-year-old gelding from the race. However, Dunhill has turned a corner in the last month, with his five-length victory in the Invercargill Gold Cup (2600m)…

Bonecrusher hope in line for Sydney

Asterix will contest the Group 1 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2050m) at Pukekohe on Saturday. Photo: Trish Dunell Wexford Stables have moved on from the unfortunate circumstances that blighted Asterix’s last outing and the talented son of Tavistock remains on target for the Sydney autumn carnival. It’s a case of forgive and forget for trainers Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott with last season’s Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) winner, who had a valid excuse when he finished well off the pace in the Group 1 Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m).…
