Two ace gallopers backing-up from runs in the Ranvet Stakes last weekend dominate markets for the Group 1 $1.5 million Tancred Stakes (2400m) this Saturday in Sydney.
Rosehill Gardens is host to a double-shot of elite level autumn racing action on the weekend including the Tancred Stakes heading proceedings over the mile-and-a-half.
Sitting top of the latest Tancred Stakes odds online at Ladbrokes is the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Gold Trip at $4.60 and firming third-up.
The dour stayer jumps out wide with Mark Zahra continuing associations on the $6.3 million earning Outstrip stallion.
The six-year-old is best known for his impressive two-length victory in last November’s Melbourne Cup over the two miles at Flemington.
This prep he was good fresh when runner-up in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) before a distant fifth behind tearaway winner Dubai Honour here at Rosehill last Saturday in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m).
The punters are rallying for him to improve sharply whoever with Gold Trip sure to appreciate getting to the 2400m with some rain ensuring some give in the ground.
There were excuses in the slowly-run Ranvet that did not suit, and he’s proven superior on a seven-day turnaround before making him the one to beat in the Tancred.
“We probably thought a bit more of him on Saturday, but he raced well,” co-trainer Maher told the media this week.
“He was a little bit above himself before it.
“I was hoping there would be a bit more rain about in Sydney, which is something you don’t normally have to worry about at this time of year, but a shower of rain would definitely help him as well.”
The danger is last year’s Ranvet Stakes winning mare Montefilia with the David Payne-trained daughter of Kermadec good finishing second in the same race last Saturday.
She is out to $6 in Tancred Stakes betting now easing in the markets with the advantage possibly going to Gold Trip who beat her home a length in last year’s Caulfield Cup at the same weights over this distance in Melbourne during the spring.
The early Tancred Stakes market mover into $6.50 is the international raider Cleveland to be ridden from gate 11 by Kerrin McEvoy.
The Joseph O’Brien-trained Irish galloper is looking to beat home the locals in his maiden run down under.
The Camelot entire is a proven stayer with strong form at the distance and shapes-up as a genuine winning hope.
