Cullen leaves All Stars for Team Telfer

By Michael Guerin The two stables locked in battle for the New Zealand harness racing premiership are about to see a remarkable personnel change as Team Telfer looks to increase its huge footprint in industry. The brother and sister training team of Steve and Amanda Telfer will be joined in partnership in January 1 by Hayden Cullen, who at present trains in partnership with champion trainer Mark Purdon at the All Stars. Team Telfer lead the Purdon/Cullen stable by one win with just over two weeks of the harness racing…

Team Teal back in 2023

Harness Racing New Zealand’s Team Teal campaign has been confirmed for 2023. Held on both sides of the Tasman, this will be the sixth time the campaign’s been held in this country. It has been remarkably successful in making people aware of ovarian cancer,  and raising funds towards much needed research. The campaign was set up by Australian Duncan McPherson after his wife died from ovarian cancer. All of our female drivers will wear teal coloured pants throughout the campaign. The five New Zealand ambassadors will be successful drivers Sam…

Thorndon Mile target for La Crique

Group One winner La Crique (NZ) (Vadamos) has returned to Simon and Katrina Alexander’s barn ahead of further Group One targets later in summer. The daughter of Vadamos had a pleasing spring preparation in New Zealand, placing in the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) and winning the Gr.1 Arrowfield Stud Plate (1600m). She then travelled across the Tasman for her first taste of Australian racing, and her conditioners were happy with her fourth-placed run in the Gr.1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington last month. “She was right in it until…

Levante on track for Railway

Group One targets await Levante (NZ) (Proisir) in the New Year, with a trip across the Tasman in the offing should she perform to her usual high standards. The Ken and Bev Kelso-trained mare has performed with distinction in both of her starts in Australia, finishing fourth in both the Gr.1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) and Gr.1 Champions Sprint (1200m), both taken out by fellow Kiwi-bred Roch ‘N’ Horse (NZ) (Per Incanto). Prior to her hit-and-run Melbourne campaigns, the six-year-old daughter of Proisir won the Gr.1 Telegraph (1200m) and Gr.1 BCD…

Speedy Ulanova making all the right moves

Ulanova (NZ) (Santos) has a way to go to match the deeds of the best two-year-old through Stephen Marsh’s stable, but the unbeaten youngster has the potential to make a race of it. The current Double Tree by Hilton Karaka Million 2YO (1200m) $4 co-favourite delivered in style at Te Rapa in her spring debut and, following a break, was a runaway trial winner at Avondale on Monday. As far as juveniles are concerned, Ruud Awakening (Bernardini) is clearly the Marsh benchmark with five wins from seven juvenile appearances and…

Celebration for the ages

Peter Sadler is an ideas man. But his idea to apply for a slot in The Phoenix (525m) may be his best to date. Founder and owner of Peter Sadler Removals and Logistics, Sadler wanted an end-of-year Christmas celebration that would allow for a great party and a new way to give back to the ‘People of Peter Sadler’. Sadler believes that sometimes in business, people can be undervalued, and this was one thing he was determined not to happen within his business. “We reward our people for being loyal,…

Fernando favourite for Hobart Thousand

Melbourne Cup runner-up Fernando Mick is favourite for Thursday night’s Group 1 Hobart Thousand (461m); but trainer David Geall is disappointed the evergreen veteran didn’t secure a slot in Saturday night’s The Phoenix. After Fernando Mick was denied Melbourne Cup glory when edged out by Yachi Bale, beaten just half a length, Geall was optimistic he would secure the final slot in The Phoenix, which eventually went to El Dorado. “I was surprised and very disappointed he didn’t get picked for The Phoenix,” Geall said. “This will be his eighth…

Neds ‘bet’ on Zippy Tesla

Slot holder Neds have made a ‘zippy’ decision on a substitute runner in the $1.65m The Phoenix (525m) at The Meadows on Saturday night. A proactive online racing and sports betting agency, Neds’ ‘11th hour’ call was precipitated due to yesterday’s scratching of its initial selection, Plaintiff. Champion trainer Jason Thompson withdrew Plaintiff from the $1000,000 to-the-winner ‘boutique’ race due to injury. Subsequently, Neds chose ‘electrifying’ speedster Zippy Tesla – trained by Bradley Keel – from a ‘reserve pool’ of six. He will occupy Box 5 in the event and is…

Tiptronic retired

Graham Richardson with Tiptronic after his Group 1 Zabeel Classic (2000m) triumph last year. Photo: Trish Dunell Group One winner Tiptronic has been retired. The evergreen gelding has given his connections an enjoyable ride over the last few years, however, a series of disappointing results spelled the end of his racing career in the mind of co-trainer and part-owner Graham Richardson. The Matamata conditioner purchased the son of O’Reilly out of Waikato Stud’s 2015 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale draft for $100,000 and he has gone on to win…
