Good times rolling for Grylls

Craig Grylls is flying high again this season and looks to have the horsepower to continue that trend with strong books of rides at Hawera on Saturday and at Pukekohe on Boxing Day. The 32-year-old, who currently sits atop the National Jockeys’ Premiership, has struck up a lucrative association with trainer Robbie Patterson and they will combine with a quartet of chances at the Taranaki fixture. “We have been having a really good trot together, it’s been terrific and I’ve got some nice rides for him again,” he said. Grylls…

Smooth ‘Scotch’

It’s said, “laughter is the best medicine”. But there’s nothing like a smooth ‘Scotch’ as a remedy. Yes, when it comes to greyhound racing, a win is the best tonic! And that was exactly the case for popular ‘octogenarian’, Brendan Dewan. He and his son, Matthew have made a household name of the “Dewana” prefix in the sport. They breed-own-train under the Dozus Two syndicate. But the close-knit father/son combination – some would say they’re joined at the hip – have ridden an emotional rollercoaster during the past week. “It…

Gary ‘Bumps’ the big boys

Gary Cowcher and homebred surprise packet Bumpy’s Dad Roy will be striving to play the role of giantkiller for the second week running on Saturday night at The Meadows. At last Saturday’s Phoenix meeting, the intriguingly-named Bumpy’s Dad Roy ($9.70) upset $1.20 favourite Elite Alex, leading all-the-way in a heat of a lucrative Grade 5 series. The well-bred December ’19 son of champion sire Collision and Go Go Treetment, a half-brother to Broadford-based Cowcher’s 2019 G1 Maturity Classic finalist Ruby Girl, clocked a smart 30.01sec, his eighth win from 30…

Yesberg brings up the half century

By Brian Cross When Ruby Malone took out the Country Feasts Mobile Pace at Rangiora last Sunday, Trent Yesberg celebrated his 50-win milestone as a trainer. He and his dad, owner/breeder Paul Yesberg, weren’t there to witness the milestone however. Both were in Perth for a family wedding. In fact such was the previous day’s big event that Trent slept through the race stream. Trent celebrates 50 winners five years after training his first – Blue Blazer at Addington in October 2017. That was at about the same time Trent…

Changes to Junior Driver criteria

New criteria have been approved to increase opportunities for the country’s junior drivers. Harness Racing New Zealand has agreed on the changes following extensive consultation between junior drivers, owners, trainers and other key industry personnel. Under the old rules – in broad terms – junior drivers had to be aged between 17 and under 30yrs and have driven less than 100 wins with a guarantee of 6 seasons regardless of the number of winners driven if under 25yrs. For drivers 25yrs and older the maximum number of seasons they could…

Delbridge’s dynamic Sale Cup duo

Mark Delbridge can’t split Melbourne Cup hero Yachi Bale and defending champion Jarick Bale as his best chance of celebrating back-to-back victories in the $120,335 Group 1 TRFM Sale Cup Final (650m) on Boxing Day (Monday). “I think they can both win it,” Delbridge said. “They’re much of a muchness. The only difference is that Jarick Bale is proven over 650m, while Yachi Bale is the up-and-comer.” Sportsbet’s market on the $75,000 to-the-winner Sale Cup – Victoria’s only provincial G1 event – has young powerhouse Yachi Bale, barnstorming winner of…
