Amusez Moi team treading a quieter path

Connections of the capable Amusez Moi (NZ) (Dalghar) have erred on the side of caution and resisted the temptation to deviate from their original Hastings plan with the proven wet ground performer. They deliberated on a late change for a crack at Saturday’s Gr.1 Arrowfield Stud Plate (1600m) with the stakes-winning six-year-old before opting to take the softer option of the open handicap sprint. A heavy track and the absence of at least two leading contenders, namely elite level winners Imperatriz (I Am Invincible) and Dark Destroyer (NZ) (Proisir), from…

Edward Manifold likely for She’s Licketysplit

Kiwi raider She’s Licketysplit (NZ) (Turn Me Loose) is thriving in Melbourne and as a result trainer Andrew Forsman has elected to line her up at Flemington this weekend. She sealed her ticket across the Tasman with a first-up victory in the Gr.3 Northland Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) at Ruakaka last month and pleased her connections with her third placing in the Gr.2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) 10 days ago at Caulfield. Forsman has been delighted with the way the daughter of Turn Me Loose has come through her Australian debut…

Veteran Pirate continues to plunder

“Pirates Patch, Malcolm Davis, take a bow!” Race-caller Victoria Shaw was justifiably lavish in her praise of Pirates Patch and her Altona Green owner/trainer Malcolm Davis after the veteran speedster incredibly set a new Ballarat 450m PB at her 126th start earlier this month. Shaw later spoke to Davis about Pirates Patch’s remarkable zest for racing. “We were really happy with Pirates Patch, we really love her,” he said. “She’s a beautiful little girl, and she just seems to be getting better with age. We are looking forward to breeding…

Vale Tony Duncan

Successful Shepparton trainer Tony Duncan, well known for his ‘All Inn’ greyhounds, has passed away after a brave battle with cancer, aged 61. Duncan, who was based at Harston, was diagnosed with cancer in 2018, but his health problems failed to dampen his greyhound racing passion. “Tony lived for his dogs; they kept him going,” said Tony’s sister, Robina Seccull. “He didn’t want to give them up and his last couple of years with the dogs were his best years.” With the support of family, most notably his Dad Ian,…

Zahra Verry excited by Arc call up

Jockey Mark Zahra is excited to be heading to Paris this week to ride Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed) in Sunday’s Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (2400m) at Longchamp. Zahra has previously steered he Kiwi-bred to victory in both the Gr.1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) and the Gr.1 Caulfield Cup (2400m). The 11-time Group One winner has had two starts in France under the care of Francis-Henri Graffard, finishing last at her European debut in the Gr.1 Prix Jean Romanet (2000m) and then running third in the Gr.2 Prix Foy (2400m)…

Hayes looks on the Brightside

Mr Brightside’s (NZ) (Bullbars) three-race winning sequence ended in Sunday’s Gr.1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Sandown, but co-trainer Ben Hayes wasn’t dwelling on the rare defeat afterwards. “They all have to lose some time, they can’t always keep winning,” said Hayes, who trains in partnership with his brother JD. Ridden by Craig Williams, last season’s Gr.1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) winner Mr Brightside settled fourth and couldn’t improve on that position at the finish, left flat-footed by Alligator Blood (All Too Hard) upon straightening to run fifth, beaten by 2.8 lengths.…

Thunderstruck fork in the road looms

Mick Price was left slightly disappointed after stable star I’m Thunderstruck (NZ) (Shocking) finished fourth in the Gr.1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Sandown on Sunday. The son of Shocking settled second last in the run and gave the leaders a five-length start but he still loomed ominously as a winning chance halfway up the straight before just failing to finish third behind winner Alligator Blood (All Too Hard), Mo’unga (NZ) (Savabeel) and Zaaki (Leroidesanimaux). Price said I’m Thunderstruck’s next start in the Gr.1 Might And Power Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield…

Group One homecoming for Defibrillate

Graham Richardson is hoping for the perfect homecoming for Defibrillate (NZ) (Shocking) when he contests the Gr.1 Arrowfield Stud Plate (1600m) at Hastings on Saturday. After a successful career in Melbourne in which he earned more than A$750,000, Defibrillate is set to have his first run in New Zealand for three years this weekend, and with the withdrawal of Imperatriz from the race, Richardson has been able to secure the services of leading jockey Opie Bosson. In a tweet on Monday Te Akau cited track conditions and the wet forecast…
