By Adam Hamilton There is some tough love coming up for Copy That and his stablemates in Melbourne. Trainer Ray Green concedes two of his three raiders, headed by Copy That, were badly in need of racing when they were well beaten over the weekend. Copy That burned early to find the lead in a scorching 26.7sec opening quarter and wilted late finish 21.7m away in eighth spot behind the raw and exciting four-year-old Rock N Roll Doo. The other shock of the race was the end of Honolua Bay’s…

Embellish’s first trial winner ready to go
Cambridge Stud stallion Embellish was represented by his first trial winner on Tuesday when home-bred and raced filly Luberon (NZ) gave a professional display to claim her two-year-old heat on the synthetic track at Cambridge. The Group One winner’s daughter was quickly into stride for Vinnie Colgan and coasted to the line under hands and heels riding to comfortably land her 800m heat. Trained by Lance Noble, Luberon had finished third in her only other trial appearance last month at Ruakaka and is likely to return there to make her…
Vale Mary Mugavin-Brown
One of Victorian greyhound racing’s most respected families is in mourning, following the passing of Group 1-winning trainer Mary Mugavin-Brown. Mugavin-Brown, 62, was the daughter of Kevin Mugavin, with her siblings including Noel and Kevin Junior, all of whom have enjoyed great success as breeders, owners, and trainers. The family also has extremely close ties with the AFL community, with Mary’s son Jonathan Brown, a former Brisbane Lions champion and triple premiership player, while husband Brian played with Fitzroy, as did brother Noel. It has been an especially sad period…
Track concern for Ayrton first-up
Overnight and early morning rain at Caulfield was not what the trainers of Ayrton (NZ) (Iffraaj) wanted ahead of a gallop on Tuesday. The Caulfield track was bordering on a Good 4 on Monday before 1.5mm of rain overnight and a further shower as trackwork was being undertaken on Tuesday morning. The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Ayrton worked with stablemate Age Of Chivalry (NZ) (He’s Remarkable) to round off his preparation for the Gr.1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday. With race jockey Damian Lane…
Stable on trail of Group One double
Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott are hopeful of building on their dream start to the new season with key indicators pointing toward a bold showing from Dragon Leap (Pierro) in Melbourne this weekend. The training partnership celebrated a significant early domestic strike when Dark Destroyer (NZ) (Proisir) claimed the major prize on the opening day of the Hawke’s Bay spring carnival and his stablemate is doing everything asked of him across the Tasman. Dark Destroyer rounded off strongly for a first-up win in the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) last weekend…
Donna’s ‘Magnificent Seven’
Donna Knight enjoyed a morning and afternoon most trainers can only ever dream of at Ballarat on Monday. Incredibly, Knight, who’s based at the historic gold mining town of Talbot, hit pay dirt, training seven of the 12 winners, including the winners of the first five races. “I still can’t believe it myself,” Knight said on Monday afternoon. “I just kept thinking this is unbelievable. “It didn’t sink in until the last one (Kanji Length). I don’t usually get emotional, but walking back after the race, I shed a few…
Melbourne Cup & Caulfield Cup weights released
Spanish Mission (USA) ridden by Craig Williams on the way to the barriers prior to the running of the 2021 Melbourne Cup. (Brett Holburt/Racing Photos) Having finished third in the 2021 Melbourne Cup, the Peter Moody-trained Spanish Mission has been announced as the topweight for both the 2022 Melbourne Cup and 2022 Caulfield Cup with 58kg. With fellow Melbourne Cup placegetters Verry Elleegant and Incentivise both missing this year’s Victorian Spring Racing Carnival, Spanish Mission was an obvious topweight choice for Racing Victoria’s handicappers ahead of the two big features…

Miller ‘thrilled’ with And Tell Me Nolies after Debutante win
Ramon Vazquez was all smiles after winning the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante Stakes aboard And Tell Me Nolies. (Benoit Photo) Such is the quality of Peter Miller’s stable, he can fall short of his own lofty expectations but still finish just two wins from being a joint-winner of the Del Mar summer meet. That was the case on Sunday night (US time) when he finished the season at San Diego with 17 total victories – two behind winning conditioners Phil D’Amato and Bob Baffert. Miller – a nine-time Del…
