The 70-year-old announced he’s retiring from the sport after producing 80 wins from 3377 starters dating back to 1987. He also had one win as a driver, Latelastnight in Invercargill in 2009 (see video). “I’ve had a lot of fun ..but it’s also a sad night for me,” Lock told Harness Racing Unhinged’s Nigel Armstrong after his horse Honour Scroll finished eighth in race 2. No rain on Williamson’s Addington parade

By Jonny Turner A week of wild weather wasn’t enough to stop the Williamson trotters at Addington on Thursday night. Matthew Williamson made two trips to the winner’s circle, saluting in his own colours with Winning Bones before doubling up with Jimmy Carter, trained by his father Phil. A downpour of rain across Otago didn’t make training in Oamaru easy this week, but the performances of the Williamsons’ horses didn’t reflect that. “The weather made for a challenging week, we had over 100ml of rain but everyone pitched in and…

Cross Talk steps up to the big time

A seven-day delay to the Listed ATC Foundation Winter Challenge (1500m) paved the way for talented New Zealand-bred Cross Talk (NZ) (Keano) to make a highly impressive black-type debut at Rosehill on Saturday. The A$160,000 feature was originally scheduled to be held at Randwick last weekend, but the meeting was called off due to extremely rain-affected track conditions. The Winter Challenge was instead added to the Rosehill card a week later, and Cross Talk was among the late entries. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained four-year-old had already made a…

Two-from-two for Shock ‘Em Ova

New Zealand-bred three-year-old Shock ‘Em Ova (NZ) (Shocking) extended his unbeaten record to two out of two with a powerful come-from-behind performance in Saturday’s A$130,000 Dominant Plant Powered Cleaning Handicap (2040m) at Moonee Valley. Trained by Alex Rae at Cranbourne, the son of Shocking made a smart winning debut on his home track on July 7. Rae had no hesitation in upping the ante for the up-and-comer’s second start on Saturday, and Shock ‘Em Ova rose to the occasion in style. Ridden by Jake Noonan, Shock ‘Em Ova settled in…

Cross Talk relishes the Challenge of Listed feature

Cross Talk raised the bar to claim the Listed Winter Challenge at Rosehill Gardens. (Photo: Steve Hart) The rescheduled Listed Winter Challenge could not have played into the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Cross Talk’s hands anymore than what it did at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday afternoon. Originally scheduled for last weekend at Royal Randwick, the $160,000 race had to wait seven days due to wet weather, which reopened nominations, allowing Cross Talk to start in the race. Sent out as a $2.60 favourite with online bookmakers, the four-year-old gelding…
