Ayrton looking to bounce back in Stradbroke

Dual Group Three winner Ayrton (NZ) (Iffraaj) will be looking to bounce back to form when he lines-up in the Gr.1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. It will be the New Zealand-bred’s first crack at elite-level and trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr are hoping he will be competitive at a distance they believe is short of his best. The son of Iffraaj had the first blot on his near perfect record last start when eighth in the Gr.2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast,…

Dewana delight in Pink Diamond

A perfect three from three haul in the Pink Diamond Maiden Sprinter and Maiden Short Course heats at Geelong last Friday night came as a pleasant surprise to veteran trainer/breeder Brendan Dewan. Brendan, who will turn 80 in December, and son Matthew, who famously selected legendary sire Malawi’s Prince as a pup when only a teenager, enjoyed a 100 per cent strike rate with three homebred Fernando Bale x Dewana Dimie debutantes. Dewana Fernando clocked a Best Of Night 25.95sec in the Maiden Sprinter heats over 460m, while Dewana Boogie…

The end of the road for Orari racecourse

The days of harness racing on the grass at the Orari track in South Canterbury are numbered. It’s been decided that the venue will host two more meetings in November 2022 and in the autumn 2023, before it closes by July 2023. The decision comes after a Sapere report looking at racing venues. Among its many conclusions was one that Orari does not have a long term future as a racing venue. It’s the second Sapere report following a similiar review of Otago and Southland. Harness Racing New Zealand has…

Race 1 – Centreline Saddlery 0-70 Handicap (1000m) After a disappointing last start fourth as favourite the previous week, Like A Heartbeat bounced back to form to seal a narrow victory with a late finishing burst along the rails. Like A Heartbeat was seemingly no chance with 600m to go as the in-form Harpuna ($2.00 fav), going for three straight wins, and Arrogant Miss looked like fighting it out after shaking off Lisa.
