As part of Pencarrow Stud’s annual stock reduction another seven quality broodmares are currently entered in gavelhouse.com’s most recent fortnightly auction. “We are obviously racing and retaining fillies and therefore need to continuously be mindful of our numbers and offer some stock to market,” said stud manager Leon Casey. “Since the start of this year we have sold all 10 of the mares we’ve listed for pleasing prices. “We expect the latest draft to sell well come Monday night as they represent some of our best families and have been…

Vic brothers to ‘Rock’ Brisbane
Mario Briganti is ruing “visitors’ draws” for powerhouse brothers Big Opal Rocks and Rapaki Rocks in Thursday night’s heats of the Group 2 TAB Flying Amy Classic (520m) in Brisbane. Big Opal Rocks and Rapaki Rocks, winner of the Group 1 Harrison-Dawson at Sandown Park last month, both trialled sensationally at Albion Park in preparation for the heats of the $100,000 to-the-winner Flying Amy last week. Big Opal Rocks stopped the clock at a scorching 29.58sec, while Rapaki Rocks posted 29.76sec. “They’ve ticked all the boxes, except for the box…
Badgers Nuts scores at Doomben
New Zealand raider Badgers Nuts (NZ) (Rageese) is a maiden no longer after scoring over 1350m at Doomben on Wednesday. The Shaune Ritchie and Colm Murray-trained son of Rageese went into the race in good form, having finished runner-up over 1100m on the Sunshine Coast polytrack last month and stable connections said he had improved from the run. “Last time we ran second and he was probably not quite fit enough and the winner had a softer run,” stable travelling foreman Roger Smith said. “We thought he would win there,…
Industry unites for Grays
The greyhound racing industry has rallied as one behind Richard and Cheryl Gray and their three granddaughters after fire destroyed their Pyalong home last week. The Grays lost everything (except the sleeping apparel they were wearing) when fire swept through the house, setting off alarms in a life-threatening situation around 2am on Monday. Units from Pyalong, Hilldene, Glenaroua, Broadford and Kilmore fire stations were dispatched to the scene and 25 firefighters took around half-an-hour to douse the intense flames and bring the fire under control. Sadly, the residence was demolished,…
Update from the Chair
The dust certainly doesn’t have time to settle at HRNZ as the leadership and HRNZ Board continue to reshape our sport mindful of the responsibilities they have under different Acts of Parliament. The Health and Safety Act 2015 places many responsibilities on employers and contractors which impact on our sport and have implications for clubs and HRNZ in running race meetings and venues. Just as we thought we had a good understanding of that Act, along came the Racing Industry Act 2020 which has required a whole new understanding and…

Southern star on the move
South Island Filly Of The Year Reputabelle will join the Flemington stable of Mike Moroney later this month. The daughter of Pins has proved a revelation this year for trainers Michael and Matthew Pitman, winning four races in succession between January and April, including two of the three autumn legs of the South Island filly Of The Year series. The smart galloper demolished her rivals by nearly six lengths in the Listed NZB Airfreight Stakes (1400m) at Wingatui before again prevailing in the Listed NZB Insurance Stakes (1600m) at Riccarton. …

Legarto impresses on debut
Trainers Ken and Bev Kelso could have another star daughter of Proisir on their hands. Two-year-old filly Legarto (NZ) (Proisir) carries the same colours as her Group One-winning stablemate Levante (NZ) (Proisir), and didn’t let them down, winning on debut over 1100m by 3-1/4 lengths at Matamata on Wednesday. “I thought it was a really good run,” Ken Kelso said. “I was quite happy to run third halfway down to get some rating points, but she won by three and a quarter lengths. In that last 50m she got away…
Gavelhouse Plus to host Valachi Downs Dispersal
Following the announcement of the sale of Kevin and Joanna Hickman’s Valachi Downs last week, the bulk of the farm’s stock will be offered unreserved in two Gavelhouse Plus sales towards the end of this month. The sale will be the most significant New Zealand dispersal since that of Ra Ora Stud in 2001 and will include high-class Northern and Southern Hemisphere-bred mares. The broodmares will be the first to go live with the 51 Lot sale launching at the conclusion of New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Weanling Sale on 17…
