Better Rain was last seen when second at the Gold Coast in the QTIS Jewel. (Photo: Tom Smith Racing) Missile Thunder could very well be the best two-year-old in Queensland. Upbeat Mathews returns to public training fold

Buoyed by this week’s announcement of increased prize-money in New Zealand racing, accomplished horseman Howie Mathews is eager to return to New Zealand’s public training ranks. In a career spanning more than four decades, Mathews has trained hundreds of winners including the likes of dual Group One winner Dorabella and outstanding stayer Sampson. The last few seasons have seen him scale his Otaki operation right back, saddling fewer than 50 starters since 2019. The only horse to represent him this season has been Free Spirit, who won on her home…

Bosson and The Chosen One hoping to both bow out winning

A summer holiday in Spain is beckoning champion jockey Opie Bosson but he’s not letting himself think about that too much until after Saturday’s Q22 at Eagle Farm. Bosson admitted he was really looking forward to reuniting with his family in Barcelona on Sunday but said his focus was firmly on getting the best out of Group One winner The Chosen One in his final race before he begins stud duties at Waikato’s Highview Stud.
