Pretty in ‘Pink’

The Ray Borda show rolled on when Aston Velvet claimed the $126,500 Group Listed Pink Diamond Champion Distance final (660m) at Ballarat tonight. A leviathan SA breeder, Borda is one of Victorian greyhound racing’s biggest contributors and thoroughly deserved the $75,000 winner’s purse and $11,250 breeders’ bonus. Trained by Michelle Mallia at Avalon, Aston Velvet ($4.20) was always prominent and scored a comfortable 2.1L win over Greysynd Shock ($22.60), with Collinda Patty ($2.40F) – which won last year’s inaugural Pink Diamond Challenger Sprinter final – a further 1.04L away third…

Dwyer confident Last Chance will put up a fight in Eye Liner

Sunshine Coast trainer Shaun Dwyer (second left) with connections after Last Chance’s victory in the $125,000 Open Quality Handicap (1350m) at Doomben on April 9. (Picture: Grant Peters/Trackside Photography) Shaun Dwyer is adamant – nothing beats being back in the great state of Queensland. But he’s also smart enough to know that he will not be able to follow through on his plans to grow his stable unless he continues to train feature-race winners. And there is no better opportunity to do that than Saturday’s $200,000 Eye Liner Stakes (1350m)…

Swords Drawn following Cups’ trail

Shaune Ritchie is expecting Swords Drawn to give a good account of himself in Saturday’s Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m), but believes the stayer’s best chance of a major Australian success is a fortnight away. The Cambridge trainer, who operates in partnership with Colm Murray, has been pleased with the six-year-old’s progress since he finished sixth in his Queensland debut in last month’s Gold Coast Cup (2400m). “He’s not a big horse and had 58kg and he’s on 54.5kg now so he’s pretty well-weighted in this race, but I’m not 100…
