Pacing-bred mare to make trotting debut
By Joshua Smith, Harness News Desk Easy McCartney will join the dual-gaited club at Rangiora on Sunday when she contests the Anne Thompson Memorial Graduation Series (Heat 2) Trot (2000m). A daughter of Net Ten EOM, the five-year-old mare was bred to pace and had three starts in that gait, however, she had always shown an aptitude to trot. Around Christmas time last year, breeder-owner-trainer Allan Shutkowski caved to the notion of trying her as a trotter and she has made steady progress since then. “She is bred to pace…

Ranting back in winner’s enclosure
Ranting (NZ) (Zoustar) has made a return to the winner’s enclosure at Caulfield after undergoing two operations. A wind operation coupled with a gelding operation saw Ranting take out the Ian Miller Handicap (1100m) on Saturday. The victory was Ranting’s second in 17 starts with his sole win previously coming in the Gr.3 Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield 18 months ago. The Blue Sapphire was a three-horse race with Ranting defeating Hanseatic (Street Boss) and Anders (Not A Single Doubt) with both those colts retired to stud the following…

In doing so, the 23-year-old went on to record his maiden Group 1 triumph. Despite being given a $17 winning chance with Ladbrokes and the least supported…

Free Of Debt pipped Savatoxl on the line to claim the DC McKay Stakes. Photo: Makoto Kaneko Free Of Debt’s thrilling victory on the line in the $127,250 DC McKay Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville was just the latest chapter in a career that has continued to amaze trainer Chris Bieg. Dom Tourneur used all his experience to get the five-year-old home over a gallant Savatoxl for Tony and Calvin McEvoy, the six-year-old opponent never giving up. But Free Of Debt used his spot four-wide to get his neck across the…
Zaaki wins second Hollindale Stakes
Zaaki has claimed consecutive wins in the Hollindale Stakes. Photo: Darren Winningham Zaaki has remained unbeaten in Queensland following another gritty win in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast. The Annabel Neasham-trained seven-year-old won this race 12 months ago in his first Queensland start, before going on to win the Doomben Cup and Q22, with those races once again being the plan from here. After taking up the running under James McDonald, the star galloper never looked like getting running down, despite a late rally from…

Robinson provides quinella in Riccarton feature
Local trainer Lance Robinson admitted he wasn’t quite sure where to look halfway down the straight in Saturday’s Listed Daphne Bannan Memorial Great Easter Stakes (1400m) at Riccarton. Robinson had saddled up stable duo Live Drama (NZ) (Ghibellines) and Khimar War (NZ) (Sweet Orange) in the day’s second black-type feature and with 600m to run both of his chances were looking like they would be right in the fight at the business end of the contest. That judgement proved spot on as Live Drama scooted up the inner on the…
Stardome too strong in Gold Coast Cup
Barely 10 minutes after winning the Listed Berkley Stud Champagne Stakes (1200m) at Riccarton with Diss Is Dramatic (NZ) (Dissident), prominent Kiwi syndicators Go Racing landed another feature win on the other side of the Tasman with Stardome (NZ) (Savabeel) in the XXXX Gold Coast Cup (2400m). The six-year-old son of Savabeel went into the A$125,000 staying feature in a rich vein of form, having won or placed in all of his previous four starts at Toowoomba, the Gold Coast, Eagle Farm and Doomben. The step up to 2400 metres…
