Cambridge trainers Roger James and Robert Wellwood are well on their way toward their most successful season since forming a training partnership at the beginning of the 2018-19 term. Their top tally to date was 30 winners in that initial season and they are currently sitting on 20 with a best ever mark of six black-type winners and realistic chances of adding to their stakes haul at Trentham on Saturday. “Hopefully, that’s the case and we have had a really good season and have got some nice horses, all things…

Further stakes increases announced
The Board of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) has announced further stakes increases. An increase of $2.4 million has been allocated for the period of 3 April until 26 August 2022 and includes stakes lifts across the board. As outlined in July when announcing the $7 million injection into stakes NZTR Chairman Cameron George reemphasised that the NZTR Board has created a rolling funding policy. “As opposed to announcing increases across a full racing season, this policy enables the Board to provide increased funding to the industry off the back…
Waisake primed for Wellington Cup defence
A stirring gallop at New Plymouth has given Allan Sharrock all the reassurance he needs about Waisake’s (NZ) (Zed) readiness for back-to-back victories in one of New Zealand’s premier staying tests. Waisake is a clear favourite for the Gr.3 New Zealand Campus of Innovation and Sport Wellington Cup (3200m) following his stirring victory in the Gr.3 Mode Technology Trentham Stakes (2100m) on January 15. It was his first sign of form following four lead-up runs but it confirmed he was close to the peak that resulted in his Wellington Cup…
