What McKell Cup Day 2022
Where Rosehill Gardens Racecourse – James Ruse Dr, Rosehill NSW 2142
When Saturday, June 18, 2022
First Race 11am AEST

Rosehill Gardens will host 10 metropolitan races in New South Wales on Saturday, June 18, with just the one black-type race – the Listed W.J. McKell Cup (2000m). HorseBetting’s New South Wales racing analyst presents his best bet in the feature race, as well as his top tips and quaddie numbers throughout the course of the program.

The track is rated a Good 4 and the rail is out 6m for the entire course, so we are expecting the fence to be hot. The field for the first race of the afternoon is scheduled to face the starter at 11am AEST.

W.J. McKell Cup Best Bet – Surf Dancer

Surf Dancer was finally able to put it all together a fortnight ago and lead throughout to win pretty comfortably over 1800m. The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained son of Lope De Vega looks to be the natural leader in this eight-horse field, and with the rail out 6m, that should play right into his hands. The six-year-old was tough when beating Arapaho two weeks ago at this track, and while this is a step up in grade, the field isn’t that strong. The 3kg weight relief is another big advantage in Surf Dancer’s favour.

Best Bet at Rosehill Gardens – Glittery

The $6.50 on offer with online bookmakers for Glittery is absurd. The James Cummings-trained three-year-old filly was terrific when fresh on May 18, winning well on the Kensington track when defeating Deep Romance and a dominant subsequent winner in Po Kare Kare. The daughter of Medaglia D’oro has a terrific record over 1100m, with all three of her career wins coming over this trip. Hugh Bowman can get the best out of this three-year-old as she shoots for consecutive victories.

Next Best at Rosehill Gardens – Kibou

Kibou returned as a gelding on June 1 at Warwick Farm and blew his rivals away despite not really knowing what he was there to do. The talented two-year-old ended up recording a 3.37-length victory in the 1100m event on a Heavy 9 while defeating Ramones, who ran second at metropolitan grade on Wednesday. The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained son of Maurice steps out to 1400m, which could be a genuine query this early in his career, but if he shows his standard muster from barrier six, finds the front and stacks them up, he could take some serious beating. He looks a lovely horse that we can follow through the grades.

Best Value at Rosehill Gardens – Impasse

We mentioned that the rail could be hot, and that is because the last time we saw a dry track at Rosehill when the rail was out 6m, the leaders and the horses that made rails runs were winning for fun. The winner of the last race on that day was Impasse, who saluted at very healthy odds when second-up. The Matthew Dunn-trained seven-year-old doesn’t win out of turn, but in seven second-up runs he has recorded three wins and two thirds. He wasn’t too bad first-up in Listed company at Scone, but now he gets to a track he has won at, drops significantly in class and, most importantly, is second-up. Barrier 14 is not ideal, but if Keagan Latham can find the fence and pinch some runs, he could give us a sight at any old price.
