The Group 1 Thousand Guineas is the feature event on Wednesday’s nine-race program at Caulfield, and a competitive field of 11 three-year-old fillies have accepted to compete for the $1 million on offer.
Despite the Peter Moody-trained Boogie Dancer being a $3.50 favourite with online bookmakers, it looks to be an open edition of the Thousand Guineas with She’s Licketysplit ($4.50), North Star Lass ($5.50), Russian Conquest ($8) and Madame Pommery ($9) all well supported in early betting markets.
The obvious leader in the race is North Star Lass from the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott yard, while market elect Boogie Dancer and main danger She’s Licketysplit will follow the leader wherever she goes having drawn barriers six and five, respectively.

The Andrew Forsman yard is low flying at the moment, and it is hard to knock the way his filly She’s Licketysplit has performed in Australia heading towards the Thousand Guineas. She was forced to travel three-wide with no cover on a Heavy deck when carrying 59kg in the Thousand Guineas Prelude and did well to stick on for third on that occasion. She then headed to Flemington where she won eased down in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes on October 1. She retains the services of Damian Lane which is a massive bonus and from barrier five, Frosty should have this girl lobbed on the heels of the leaders throughout. She’s the only filly in the race who has won at the mile and with that in mind, she has to be the one we side with in Wednesday’s Thousand Guineas.
The biggest danger in the race is without a doubt Boogie Dancer. The Sooboog filly won the Prelude by a cool 3.25-lengths eased down when relishing the Heavy 8 conditions This will be the first time the filly has seen a firmer deck which is a query, but her wins on face value have her as a deserving favourite ahead of the Group 1. She got the better of She’s Licketysplit in the Prelude having gained a cosier run in transit and have a weight advantage on her rival. Having drawn directly outside her main rival, look for Luke Nolen to stalk She’s Licketysplit wherever that filly goes and with even luck upon straightening, Boogie Dancer will be fighting out the finish.
We have plenty of respect for North Star Lass and Russian Conquest who look every bit Group 1 runners. Whilst one at a big price, the Patrick Payne-trained Jenny Jerome is sure to appreciate the step out to the mile, with a run in the VRC Oaks firmly on the agenda for the progressive stayer.
