The 2022 Robert Sangster Stakes is the second Group 1 of the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival, with a field of 16 fillies and mares set to do battle over 1200m at Morphettville this Saturday. The $502,500 event has a good mix of local and interstate flavour, while previous winners Instant Celebrity (2021) and Bella Vella (2020) are back in a bid to win their second Sangster.
The 2022 edition is a wide-open betting affair, with Chris Waller’s September Run the $5 favourite with online bookmakers as she looks to give Craig Williams back-to-back success in this race. Ciaron Maher & David Eustace’s duo Bella Nipotina ($6.50) and Away Game ($9) are in single figures, along with the enigmatic Brooklyn Hustle ($9.50), while classy three-year-old filly Argentia is a $12 hope.
Local horses All Banter ($26), Bella Vella ($15) and Champagne Dreams ($20) look to be the leaders on paper, while Away Game and Bella Nipotina can use their low barriers to hold a forward position. September Run is likely to settle down midfield from barrier five, with Chaillot ($23), Brooklyn Hustle and Instant Celebrity ($13) expected to be whipping the field in.

We are with one of the locals on Saturday in the form of last-start Redelva Stakes winner Champagne Dreams. The Wayne Francis & Glen Kent-trained three-year-old could not have been anymore impressive in the Listed 1100m event, leading from go to woah on April 23 in a 1.4-length victory. Prior to that, the daughter of Reward For Effort was narrowly beaten by Hellfest in the Group 3 Typhoon Tracy Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley, while the start before that she was third behind two of the best sprinters in South Australia – Kemelpasa and Behemoth – in the Durbridge Stakes (1100m). She is going to get the run of the race from barrier four under Paul Gatt, likely slotting in behind Bella Vella and All Banter, before moving up to the leaders in the straight with just the minimum of 55kg on her back. The $21 on offer at Bet365 looks overs on recent form.
Bella Nipotina has developed into a really nice racehorse over the past 12 months, and if any horse is deserving of a Group 1 victory in this field, it is her. The Maher & Eustace-trained four-year-old finished in the minor money in both the Manikato Stakes and VRC Classic during the spring, before finishing midfield in her two Group 1 attempts this calendar year. The mare by Pride Of Dubai found her best form last start in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes during Day Two of The Championships at Randwick, jumping out of the ground late to win the fillies-and-mares event. On Saturday, she will find herself back on top of the ground, which is where she does her best racing, while barrier three under John Allen is going to ensure she gets the perfect run in transit, just forward of midfield. While Champagne Dreams is the value in the race, Bella Nipotina is the one they have to beat.
There is no real knock on September Run, who returned to the winner’s circle last time out in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes. She is certainly a classy mare and gets a great combo of Waller and Williams. If she’s back to her best, she can win, but her best runs have been few and far between of late. Argentia is the other filly who we have to treat with respect, as she is the one with the untapped potential. If she blows them away, we won’t be shocked.
