Sydney-based trainer Mark Newnham appears to have a live chance in next fortnight’s $1.5 million Golden Slipper following Seven Veils’ win in Saturday’s Listed Reisling Stakes at Randwick.
The lightly-raced two-year-old improved greatly on her debut runner-up at Kensington three weeks ago, rolling forward under Kerrin McEvoy to lead all the way in the small field of six.
The daughter of Shalaa out of a winning Redoute’s Choice mare lapped up the heavy conditions, even finding something extra at the 100m mark to draw clear from the challenging Dashing Legend.
A win on heavy going could come in handy ahead of next fortnight’s two-year-old feature, and it appears the bookies agree with Seven Veils firming significantly from $101 into $26 with Ladbrokes.
There was no such luck for short-priced $2.10 favourite Russian Conquest.
After running second to Millions favourite Coolangatta in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic, the daughter of Russian Revolution found herself too far back at the top of the straight, working home only fairly out wide to run fourth.
Russian Conquest remains the steady $8.00 second elect in Magic Millions betting, while Saturday’s eye-catching third place getter Ojai can be found at $51.00.
