Kiwi fillies to feature at Bendigo

By Adam Hamilton Superstar filly Bettor Twist heads the Kiwi raid on the Breeders Crown three-year-old series at Bendigo on Friday night. But, just like her first Aussie run, Bettor Twist has the task ahead from the worst possible draw (gate 11) with local star Beach Music drawn to work to the lead and control things from gate five. Beach Music, second-stringer to Ladies In Red in the powerhouse Emma Stewart and Clayton Tonkin barn, found the front and beat Bettor Twist when they clashed last Saturday week. Trainer Nathan…

$5.3m turnover for New Zealand Cup day

Turnover on yesterday’s New Zealand Cup meeting topped $5m, but it was still well short of last year’s total. Covid restrictions meant there were only around one thousand people on-course for harness racing’s biggest day and the effect on turnover was obvious. Last year on-course turnover was over $740,000, yesterday it was $62,691. Overall turnover for the day was just over $5.3m with off-course turnover accounting for $2,849,988 and fixed odds betting at $2,474,069. In 2020 off-course turnover was $3,205,363 and fixed odds $2,594,709. Yesterday’s total of $5,386,748 compared to…

G2 runner-up Twisted Reality and last start winner Aces Are Trumps are considered the biggest threats to the Mark Delbridge-trained kennelmates. The Horizon finalist Whistling Bullet (2 of last 4) v Aston Harlow v G2 finalist Zipping Vernon and Vardan Bale v Flying Lantern v Gracie Bale v Dynamic Prince (5 from 9) should be great battles.…

Shinn has faith in Sky Field

Sky Field (purple cap) lengthens under Blake Shinn. Blake Shinn is holding faith in Sky Field’s ability to bounce back after the chestnut produced a rousing first-past-the-post trial effort at Sha Tin Tuesday morning (9 November). Failing to fire a shot last start when 10th in the Group 2 Premier Bowl Handicap (1200m), the 120-rater couldn’t match his first-up heroics which saw him snatch a fast-finishing second place in the Group 3 National Day Cup Handicap (1000m) behind Super Wealthy. Stepping out this morning for the first time since that…

Size two-pronged in hot sprint at Happy Valley

John Size has two key chances in tomorrow night’s feature race. Pursuing a record-breaking 12th trainers’ championship, John Size heads into Wednesday’s (10 November) cracking Class 2 High West Handicap (1200m) at Happy Valley double-handed with Sight Success and Drops Of God – a pair of last-start winners aiming to sustain their handler’s solid run of recent form. Size has four wins from the last three race meetings, including a double last weekend thanks to Fantastic Way and Master Delight, narrowly missing out on a treble or possibly a four-timer…

New Zealand Cup’s defining moment

By Michael Guerin A split second battle won early in Tuesday’s $600,000 IRT New Zealand Cup ultimately won Copy That the war. And that left 76-year-old trainer Ray Green, trapped watching the race in Auckland, awash with emotion and relief after the greatest triumph of his career. The Pukekohe pacer became the first North Island-trained winner of the Cup in 13 years, leading most of the way in the hands of the country’s leading reinsman Blair Orange. But it could have started, and ended, so differently because while the Cup…

Surprise Baby eyes racetrack return

Surprise Baby (NZ) (Shocking) is on track to return in the Gr.3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on November 27 for new trainer Gavin Bedggood after a gallop in front of Racing Victoria stewards on Monday. An embargo meant Bedggood had to gallop the seven-year-old son of Shocking in front of stewards and get a veterinary clearance for the horse to race, with the final step a jumpout at Cranbourne next week. Surprise Baby hasn’t raced since jumping favourite in the 2020 Gr.1 Melbourne Cup (3200m), where he finished…
