Butt confident with improved draw for Copy That

By Adam Hamilton  Anthony Butt doesn’t like finishing second. While the champion driver was full of praise for Copy That’s effort last week, he wants to go one better with the superstar Kiwi pacer in Saturday night’s $100,000 Group 1 Sunshine Sprint (1660m) at Albion Park. But that means having to dethrone King Of Swing, Australia’s best pacer. Copy That has a decided barrier draw advantage over King Of Swing this week, so much so he’s a clear favourite. The Aussie TAB has Copy That $2 and King Of Swing…

Gibbs in search of more home track success

Ruakaka trainer Chris Gibbs could have as many as seven runners at his home track meeting on Saturday, with a decision as to whether handy two-year-old Burgundy Dancer will contest the Whangarei ITM (1200m) to be left to the day. The gelded son of Burgundy followed up a gutsy Pukekohe success with an equally game second-placing at Te Rapa last week, and while Gibbs has no issue with the manner in which the youngster came through those exertions, he would be assisted by forecast rain, with the track currently a…

Trentham test for Dolcetto

It may have been nearly a year since Dolcetto’s (NZ) (Per Incanto) last victory, but trainer Sylvia Kay is hopeful he can make a return to the winner’s stall at Trentham on Saturday. The eight-year-old gelding will line-up in the IRT Whyte Handicap (1600m) where he will be met by his favoured heavy surface. He has recorded eight of his 10 wins on the surface, and Kay said the track’s Heavy11 rating will make Saturday’s mile a staying test, particularly with his 62kg impost. “His best efforts are usually over…

Jackfrost set for jumping return

Talented hurdler Jackfrost (NZ) (Gallant Guru) will make his long awaited return to the jumping scene when he runs in the Harold Pateman Hurdles (3000m) at Phar Lap Raceway on Friday. Two years ago the Brian and Shane Anderton-trained gelding headed to Victoria to try and plunder some of their rich jumping features, however, his campaign was cut short when he injured a suspensory ligament in training. He returned to New Zealand where he underwent stem cell surgery and spent time at part-owner John ‘Coaster’ Howes Canterbury property undergoing rehab.…

Tomlinson out to defend title

By Jonny Turner There will be no flying under the radar for Kerryn Tomlinson when she starts work on defending her New Zealand Junior Drivers Championship title at Addington on Thursday night. The Otago-based reinswoman will be out to establish an early lead in the series she won last year after being the rank outsider of the field. Bookmakers sent Tomlinson out at massive $101 price to win last year’s championship before she defied those odds and rewarded her loyal backers when clinching victory in the last three heats on…

New beginnings and fond farewells for top mares

By Michael Guerin One of the forgotten heroines of Australasian pacing has returned to work just as her arch rival gets ready to depart the scene. Belle Of Montana is back in business for trainers Barry Purdon and Scott Phelan as the horse she had so many great battles with as a three-year-old Princess Tiffany, prepares for her last career start at Albion Park this Saturday. Princess Tiffany is being retired and will come home to New Zealand and be bred to Captaintreacherous. Belle Of Montana hasn’t raced since being…
