Rejuvenated Asano excited for raceday return at Timaru

Kozzi Asano isn’t holding out much hope of defending his national champion apprentice title but with five weeks of the season remaining, he has returned from injury and intends giving it his best shot. The Christchurch-based Japanese apprentice had the upper hand in an engaging apprentice premiership battle with Taranaki jockey Hazel Schofer before his campaign was halted with a broken collarbone sustained in a fall from Jackaroo at Woodville on May 9. In the interim, Schofer has built up a commanding 10-win lead, though Asano is not completely conceding…

Finding a bargain is a Breeze to Jerome Tan

Amazing Breeze (NZ) (He’s Remarkable) was a living proof horses don’t need fancy pedigrees and prohibitive price tags to be a winner. The son of He’s Remarkable was bought for only NZ$6,000 out of Mapperley Stud’s 2019 New Zealand Bloodstock Book 3 yearling draft by trainer Jerome Tan, among a bunch of cheap buys that also included two progeny of little-known New Zealand sire Remind, Classic Thirtysix (NZ) and Khao Manee (NZ). Amazing Breeze is the first among Tan’s “cheapies” to hit the jackpot when he unleashed a barnstorming finish…

Daily Mail: Heavyweights to renew acquaintances

Two of the sport’s heavyweights – Yozo Bale v Qwara Bale – are drawn side by side in what looms as a fascinating contest at The Meadows tonight. The dynamic duo have won four group races between them, and filled the quinella in last month’s Warrnambool Cup.    WATCH Also at The Meadows, we see an exciting clash featuring Mepunga Reject and Hill Top Jack – who ran one-two in last weekend’s rich Cranbourne Winter Cup – up against G1 winner Playlist. The gifted Special Talent will be out to stretch…

Atishu joins leading Sydney barn

Go Racing syndicator Albert Bosma believes the best time to send New Zealand horses to Australia is when they’re on the way up rather than when there’s nothing left to prove at home. That philosophy is the main reason that quality filly Atishu (NZ) (Savabeel) has moved across the Tasman to the Chris Waller stable for her four-year-old racing. Owned by the Go Racing Ring a Ring Syndicate, Atishu won the last four of her nine New Zealand starts for Cambridge trainer Stephen Marsh, including two Listed races at Riccarton…

Season finale for Coventina Bay

The curtain will come down this weekend on what has been a long but fruitful season for Coventina Bay (NZ) (Shamexpress). Trainer Robbie Patterson has lined her up nine times this season, for three wins, including victories in the Gr.3 Cuddle Stakes (1600m) and Gr.3 J Swap Sprint (1400m). The daughter of Shamexpress also placed in the Listed Legacy Lodge Sprint (1200m), Gr.2 Rich Hill Mile (1600m), and Gr.1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m). Her runner-up result in the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes secured her trip across to Brisbane for…

Staying platform for Tutukaka

Tony Pike is hoping to break maiden ranks with promising stayer Tutukaka (NZ) (Tavistock) and gets a gilt-edged opportunity in Saturday’s Listed Tattersall’s Life Member Stakes (1830m) at Eagle Farm in Brisbane. The newly introduced race, which caters for late-season juveniles looking for ground, initially attracted just five nominations, which was later bolstered to six with the addition of last-start Ipswich winner Bayerische. A Tavistock half-brother to top mare Melody Belle (NZ) (Commands), Tutukaka has been set for Saturday’s contest since finishing runner-up to stablemate Rangi Toa (NZ) (Shamexpress) at…

Sierra Sue on the cusp of Tiara tilt

Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young believe Sierra Sue (NZ) (Darci Brahma) is a big hope in the Gr.1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday, she just needs a start. The four-year-old daughter of Darci Brahma is the first emergency for the last Group One of the season, and her connections have their fingers crossed for a scratching so she can take her place in the field. While she takes two unplaced runs into Saturday, Young was impressed with her last start sixth-placed performance in the Gr.2 Dane Ripper…
