Supreme Heights on target for stakes test

Mark Brosnan is hoping to add another stakes win to Supreme Heights’ (NZ) (Jimmy Choux) burgeoning record when she contests the Listed AGC Training Stakes WFA 1600 at Wanganui on Saturday. She boasts an imposing record in black-type company, having won twice at Group Three level and placed at stakes level on another three occasions, from just the seven starts. That included a runner-up result behind Pop Star Princess (NZ) (Makfi) when fresh-up in the Gr.3 Rotorua Stakes (1400m) last month, which duly pleased her Matamata trainer. “I was very…

Coventina Bay basking in the Sunshine State

Group One performer Coventina Bay (NZ) (Shamexpress) made the best possible start to her Queensland campaign on Tuesday. Under regular rider Samantha Collett, she won her 1200m trial at the Sunshine Coast by 3-1/2 lengths. Trainer Robbie Patterson was pleased with her hit-out ahead of her Group targets in the coming month. “She trialled nicely,” Patterson told SENTrack. “I have got Sam Collett over here, she is riding her in track work and is going to ride raceday as well.” Patterson had been eyeing a trip across the Tasman with…

Dobson odds-on for two Group Ones on Jewels day

By Brad Reid Ian Dobson has had more than his fair share of success when it comes to premier race meetings at Addington Raceway. It started in the 90’s with the Smooth Fella mare, Jam Cover Girl, named after the business that allowed Dobson to get heavily involved in the sport that is his passion. What transpired was a golden run for more than two decades through the deeds of the great Christian Cullen, his champion daughter, Mainland Banner and son in Gotta Go Cullen. For a man who has…

She made a good start to her professional career, riding 27 winners in 2016-17, including another…

South Island’s rain unlikely to affect Jewels

By Michael Guerin A cautious approach from visiting trainers means Sunday’s huge IRT Harness Jewels meeting is set to be largely unaffected by this week’s Canterbury flooding. And with the one horse in the market who was under an injury cloud recovering well the all-group one card could go ahead without any market-changing scratchings. Canterbury and Mid-Canterbury are two of the spiritual homes of harness racing not only in this country but in Australasia and after floods swept through Mid-Canterbury earlier this week it could have easily impacted the meeting.…
