Second-up run crucial for Mr Malek

After an encouraging first-up run from his new star stable transfer Mr Malek (NZ) (Swiss Ace), trainer Steven Burridge is hoping to see that form hold up this Saturday. Burridge has penciled in the Stewards’ Cup (1600m) on July 3 as the Swiss Ace four-year-old’s short-term target, with an even bigger catch three weeks later, the Singapore Derby (1800m) on July 25. But before counting his chickens, Burridge said that Mr Malek must at least reproduce that eye-catching first-up third over 1200m on May 22 in this Saturday’s easier S$85,000…

Ferdinand fires in ‘The Horizon’ heats

The introduction of new feature race ‘The Horizon’ (440m) has paid off handsomely for Sale Greyhound Racing Club with a Group-quality field, headlined by G2 Ballarat and G2 Shepparton Cups hero Ferdinand Boy, to battle out the inaugural final. Four heats of ‘The Horizon’, which offers a $25,000 winner’s purse, were held on Sunday evening and Ferdinand Boy, trained by David Geall, produced the standout performance at his Sale debut. Drawn in box three in the third heat, Ferdinand Boy started $1.80 favourite ahead of Jason Thompson’s Aussie Secret, which…

First winner for Tarzino

Westbury Stud stallion Tarzino recorded his first win as a sire at Sandown on Wednesday and fittingly it was his former trainer who saddled the victor. Caulfield conditioner Mick Price trained Tarzino to wins in the Gr.1 VRC Derby (2500m) and Gr.1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) on his way to being crowned Champion Three-Year-Old colt in Australia, prior to heading to stud in New Zealand. Price, who now trains in partnership with Michael Kent Jnr, was delighted to train Tarzino’s first winner when Jungle Magnate (NZ) held on to win on…

Normal exporting protocol to resume

Export of horses to and via Australia is set to return to normal with New Zealand in the final stages of having Australia accept its country freedom from Theileria equi status. Travel was halted last year after a single, isolated case of the tick-borne protozoal disease, piroplasmosis was found in New Zealand. Following the detection of the single case, New Zealand Bloodstock Airfreight, IRT, the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association and the New Zealand Equine Health Association have worked closely with MPI (Ministry For Primary Industries) to regain the country…

Moroney watching Queensland raiders from home

Michael Moroney will have to watch his Queensland contenders over the next week on a screen at home after being caught up in Melbourne’s COVID-19 enforced lockdown. The Flemington trainer will contest the Gr.1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday with New Zealand-bred filly Yatton (NZ) (Savabeel), and he said she is better than her form suggests. The daughter of Savabeel has finished unplaced in her last two starts in the Listed Gold Bracelet (1800m) and Gr.2 The Roses (2000m), but he expects to see improvement from her…
