Travel no concern for Ayrton

Promising three-year-old Ayrton hasn’t taken any ill-effect from his long road trip from Melbourne to Queensland last week according to co-trainer Mick Price. The son of Iffraaj was due to fly to Brisbane last Tuesday, however Queensland Health notified those onboard the Cathay Pacific cargo flight that they would need to quarantine in Brisbane for a fortnight following their arrival. As a result, the Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained gelding hit the road last week and has settled in well in his new environment. “The two 10-hour trips the week…

No slowing Mustang down

Cambridge trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman are poised for further late-season juvenile success as they take a dual-pronged attack on Saturday’s Listed Mainland Auckland Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Ellerslie with Mustang Valley and Samarkand.  The stable has already sent out impressive back-end two-year-old Turn The Ace to win at stakes level, and there are high hopes for the both runners this weekend, who performed admirably at their respective debuts.  Punters have already flagged their interest in two-year-old filly Mustang Valley, supported from $3.80 into $3.40 since TAB markets opened…

Two-state Australian focus for James and Wellwood

Roger James and Robert Wellwood are set for a quiet Saturday on the home front with no runners in New Zealand, but the Cambridge trainers will have plenty on their plate on the other side of the Tasman. They are keeping a watchful eye on the evolving COVID-19 situation in Melbourne, where the in-form Hypnos (NZ) (Reliable Man) is set to line up in the Cyclotek Handicap (2000m) behind closed doors at Caulfield. Meanwhile, the Gr.3 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1800m) at Eagle Farm gives classy mare Two Illicit (NZ) (Jimmy…

Clotworthy enjoying Queensland escape

Leaving the husband at home to look after the kids while you head to Queensland for a few weeks probably sounds enticing to a lot of Kiwi women at the moment. That dream has turned into a reality for Emma Clotworthy, who has been enjoying the warmer climate of the Sunshine State over the last three weeks while looking after former stable runner Hezashocka (NZ) (Shocking). The son of Shocking was purchased by OTI Racing after his victory in the Gr.2 Championship Stakes (2100m) at Ellerslie last month and transferred…

Ray Green philosophical after horror IRT Harness Jewels draw

By Michael Guerin Trainer Ray Green is taking a pragmatic view to Copy That copping the worst possible draw for next week’s IRT Harness Jewels at Cambridge. Copy That has drawn the outside of the second line in the star-studded Civtec 4YO Emerald, joined Amazing Dream (9), Krug (9) and Bolt For Brilliance (11) as glamour horses facing tough draw on the all-mile, all-group one raceday on Sunday week. Green, as usual, wasn’t panicking. “Well somebody had to draw there,” he said in his laconic drawl. “It will make for…

Change at the top for Caduceus Club

Changes have been announced to the running of the Caduceus Club Fillies Series. Long-time administrator Ken Crooke is winding back his involvement, after decades of “tireless work”. “For more than 20 years Ken has been responsible for the marketing, compiling the entries and looking after the money, all of this on a purely voluntary basis,” says Auckland Trotting Club vice-president Jamie McKinnon, “ but the time has come to him to kick back, enjoy his racing and Caduceus Club camaraderie and hand over the reins.” Ken Crooke will still be…
