Racing future not good for Ride High

Don’t expect to see Aussie superstar Ride High back at the races any time soon, if at all. His owner-breeder Peter Gleeson admits he has “braced myself for the fact he won’t race again” after visiting Emma Stewart and Clayton Tonkin’s stables to check-out Ride High recently. “I hope I’m wrong, but I fear the worst,” he said. “He’s now had problems with both front tendons 18 months apart. I’ve been involved with horses for a long time, I’ve told my family it’s likely he’s run his last race.” Ride…

Aussie News : May 10

The old marvel is back at it again. The one-time “King” of Menangle, Cash N Flow, returned from a break to post his 22nd win at Sydney’s home of harness. That’s from just 39 starts. The eight-year-old’s Group 1 days may be behind him, but Cash N Flow’s gate speed and love of Menangle still makes him a fantastic money-spinner for connections, including HRNZ CEO Gary Woodham. Cash N Flow’s now banked $574,201 from 72 starts with 34 wins and 13 placings. Luke McCarthy balanced him up early before surging…

Cracker Hill out of Jewels

By Jonny Turner Brad Williamson will do what is best for his stable star Cracker Hill by withdrawing him from the Harness Jewels. The Oamaru squaregaiter will not head to Cambridge next month for the four-year-old trotters’ championship, which is still set to be of the most hotly contested Jewels events despite his withdrawal. Cracker Hill was to have raced at Wyndham last month before suffering a minor knee injury, which set his autumn campaign back. After that issue was rectified and the trotter returned to work he was still…

Pink Diamond ‘Pink Rug’ promotion starts tomorrow

Starting Monday 10 May, Victorian greyhound racing is set to experience a month-long pink rug frenzy aimed at increasing awareness about next month’s inaugural $790,000 VicBred Pink Diamond series. Every time a Victorian-bred greyhound wearing the pink number eight rug wins a race in Victoria between Monday 10 May & Wednesday 9 June, that greyhound will earn an extra $250 on top of normal prize money. The bonus $250 will be distributed equally between the greyhound’s trainer (50 per cent) and breeder (50 per cent) – with each receiving $125.…

REBEL SPIRIT!

Potential superstar Rebellious heads to Sale and The Watchdog expects him to remain ‘defiantly’ undefeated. He’s only had two starts – both at Warragul – resulting in 9L and 9.5L wins in blistering BON times (22.43sec & 22.29sec). “He’s expected to start ridiculously short, so punters may want to anchor him up front in their exotic bets,” said The Watchdog of the blueblood speedster. “I can’t wait to see what he can do on the clock and he’s worth putting in your ‘blackbook’.” Meanwhile, the expert form analyst says Tarlee…

Sharps knocking on Bracelet door

Jason and Jessica Sharp have been knocking on the door of a feature victory at Sydney’s Wentworth Park with classy sisters Junk Food Junkie and Devel Sixteen since early 2020. The Avalon-based Sharps are hoping it will be a case of third time lucky when Junk Food Junkie contests tonight’s Group 3 Ladies Bracelet Final (520m), race 6 at 7.53pm, where she’s $8 with TAB. Junk Food Junkie previously qualified for the final of the G1 Peter Mosman Opal last July, while Devel Sixteen was one of the surprise packets…

Training trio embrace Mother’s Day spirit

A wonderful constant theme, that keeps presenting itself amongst the Victorian greyhound racing community, is a sense of family involvement and opportunity for any age. Most greyhound racing fans will be familiar with successive generations of people from many families actively engaged in the Victorian greyhound racing industry. However, it is not often that three consecutive generations – passionately and successfully – train greyhounds to race, particularly women. Greyhound trainers – Valda Rose, her daughter Sheree Hopkins and granddaughter Jessica Hopkins recently joined me in a heart-warming discussion at their…
