Racing was Les’ great love
Victorian greyhound racing is all the poorer for the passing of veteran trainer/breeder Les Slattery at 90 years of age. “Les just loved racing. From the horses to the dogs, if it was racing he was knee-deep in it,” said close friend and fellow trainer Daniel Pell, who Les took under his wing at a very young age. “He was great to me, not so much as a mentor but as a friend. “He would never see anyone go without. If you were in need, he’d be there for you.…
Grenfells ‘wagging’ at Wagga
Anakie husband-and-wife team Correy and Samantha Grenfell are no strangers to big-race success. Former star Orson Allen – who put them on the ‘map’ in the sport – and ‘ultimate professional’ Tiggerlong Tonk, an 11-time G1 finalist, are two cases in point. But the Grenfells can’t recall ever having four runners in a final. However, they will line up with a ‘fab four’ in the $25,000 to-the-winner Ladbrokes Graeme Hull Memorial (525m) at Wagga on Friday night. Last week, they won heats with Usman Bale (30.14sec, Best) and Xavien Bale…
Tofane pleases ahead of swansong
Trainer Mike Moroney is preparing Gr.1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) winner Tofane (NZ) (Ocean Park) for what could be her swansong on May 22 in the A$175,000 Gr.3 BRC Sprint (1350m). “We’ve decided to run in the 1350m after her first-up run, we just thought she’s lost a fair bit of her dash and starting to run to her breeding a bit,” Moroney said of the Ocean Park mare. “She’s in the Gold Coast sale. I think the owners want to get a guide as to how she’s going so…
Melbourne Cup dream for Johnny Get Angry
Trainer Denis Pagan can’t help but get a bit excited as he talks through his spring aspirations for last year’s Gr.1 VRC Derby (2400m) winner Johnny Get Angry (NZ) (Tavistock). “Probably the Makybe Diva, maybe the Turnbull Stakes and Caulfield Cup and hopefully he gets a run in the Melbourne Cup,” Pagan said. The Tavistock gelding took the 73-year-old to racing’s pinnacle last October and the now famous duo will get the chance to do it again this spring. “Not in my wildest dreams,” Pagan admitted when asked if he’d…
Walker faces more surgery
Michael Walker faces a third round of surgery on his badly broken right leg on Tuesday as the ex-pat Kiwi comes to terms with a projected prolonged absence from the saddle. Walker underwent emergency surgery on Thursday night to relieve pressure on his broken leg after a fall at Pakenham. He had further surgery on Sunday and is booked to again go under the knife on Tuesday. His manager Liam Prior said Sunday’s surgery went ‘as well as it could have’ but the jockey’s leg remains cut open between his…
