Mo’unga primed for Doncaster

Mo’unga gave trainer Annabel Neasham her first Group One win when taking out the Gr.1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) last start and she is hoping he can add a second to their tally at Randwick on Saturday. The son of Savabeel will contest the Gr.1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) where he will carry just 49.5kg with light-weight jockey Robbie Dolan aboard. He will start from barrier 19 in the 20-horse field, but Neesham said after she and Dolan had watched a number of previous Doncasters, she doesn’t believe drawing a wide marble…

NZTR’s Single National System Update #1

Dear participants, As with many industries, the Thoroughbred industry in New Zealand is within a period of change. These positive moves include New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing’s (NZTR’s) 7 reshaping projects, as released to Clubs and Recognised Industry Organisations last week. Further, NZTR is also replacing its racing management system (software). NZTR has purchased the Single National System (SNS) software from Racing Australia (RA). This is the same software used by all Principal Racing Authorities in Australia. A project is currently underway with Racing Australia to implement this new software within…

BOY, OH BOY!

The Watchdog rates his main rival as Mepunga Felix, who was a G1 Silver Chief finalist and a last-start third in the G3 Easter Cup (515m) at Sandown Park. A recent G1 Australian Cup finalist, Shima Classic clocked the fastest heat win (24.76sec) on Monday, which was one length outside Silver Lake’s 24.69sec track record. It was her eighth win from only 13 starts. Ferdinand Boy notched his fifth win in a row posting a 24.92sec heat win – almost three lengths slower than Shima Classic. He’s now chasing back-to-back…

‘He’s an absolute moral’: The Watchdog’s bold Ballarat Cup call

Expert form analyst The Watchdog believes Ferdinand Boy (pictured) is a good thing in Friday night’s $67,000 Bottle-O Ballarat Cup Final (450m). After Shima Classic recorded the fastest heat win (24.76sec) and subsequently drew box two in the final, TAB instilled her as the $2.30 favourite ahead of Ferdinand Boy at $2.80. However, the market has swung with Ferdinand Boy now into $2.30 favouritsm, while Shima Classic has drifted to $2.50. Drawn in box 8, Ferdinand Boy is chasing back-to-back country cups after he won last month’s Group 2 Shepparton…

Multi-venue focus for Marsh on Saturday

Cambridge trainer Stephen Marsh has black-type runners at three venues on Saturday, headed by Milford (NZ) (Savabeel) in the A$2 million Gr.1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick. The Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) runner-up finished a well-held eighth in the Gr.1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) when making his Australian debut a fortnight ago, racing ungenerously around the bends of the horse shoe-shaped Sydney track and has subsequently been installed a $61 chance in the Derby. “He was disappointing,” Marsh said. “He just did so much wrong. We have taken the shadow…
