Dates calendar released for 2021-22
The lower half of the North Island is one of the big winners, with 16 meetings confirmed for next season. After months of consultation between clubs, the TAB, Harness Racing New Zealand, NZ Thoroughbred Racing and New Zealand Greyhounds the Dates Calendar has been released for next season. There will be 257 meetings in the new season, a drop of four on this season. “It’s a massive balancing act,” said HRNZ’s General Manager – Racing Catherine McDonald, “we have to be fair to all the clubs and at the same…

First stakes test for No Filter
Exciting three-year-old No Filter (NZ) (Toronado) will have his first crack at stakes level when he contests the Gr.3 Inglis Sales Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) at Te Rapa on Saturday. The son of Toronado has won three of his seven starts, placing in two others, and trainer Richard Collett said with the exception of one race he has never put a foot wrong. “He has only really failed once when he over-raced in his second start at Matamata. Every run after that has been very sound, he is unlucky not…
2021/2022 racing calendar released
New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) has released its racing dates for the 2021-22 season. The final calendar is the outcome of the consideration of club submissions by the codes, discussions between the codes and TAB NZ, and TAB NZ’s final consideration and approval. “As we outlined at the beginning of April with the release of the NZTR Industry Reshaping Actions, the racing calendar is the industry’s greatest asset. It drives customer engagement and wagering turnover to fund the sport,” NZTR chief executive Bernard Saundry said. “We need to ensure we…
QUINTESSENTIAL QUINTANA
The Watchdog is tipping stereotypical young star Quintana Bale to be ‘true to type’ at Geelong. A serious talent, she’s won nine from 18 (50%) and was a finalist in the Lil Dickie Oaks (2nd) and Warrnambool Oaks (3rd). “Four runs back, she recorded a brilliant 25.05sec Warrnambool win and a similar performance can see her score again,” he said. But the expert form analyst rates ageless veteran Speed Star, who is contesting his 106th start, as the obvious danger. He’s a three-time G2 finalist and has won 44 races,…
Butcher out for Group One glory
By Joshua Smith, Harness News Desk Zachary Butcher has won the best part of 20 Group Ones as a driver in New Zealand and he is now after his first as a trainer. The South Auckland horseman had plenty of success with Zeuss Bromac two years ago when he trained and drove him to a win and two placings in New Zealand, including running third in the Gr.1 2YO Emerald (1980m) at Addington Raceway. He subsequently travelled to Australia with the son of Bettor’s Delight where he placed in the…
Telfer getting used to Canterbury life
By Joshua Smith, Harness News Desk Amanda Telfer is dipping her toes into Canterbury life before she makes the plunge later this year and moves south from her South Auckland base. Telfer, who trains in partnership with her brother Steve, is campaigning a handful of their runners in Canterbury and she is looking forward to heading their permanent South Island barn from November. “We (Stonewall Stud) have bought Jack Smolenski’s old place,” Telfer said. “It doesn’t actually all happen until the end of November this year. We are looking at…
