Vance scanning weather reports for signs of rain
Trainer Bob Vance won’t mind if the warm temperatures and fine sunny days in Auckland went missing at Pukekohe on Sunday. Vance will line-up former European and Hong Kong galloper Royal Performer (Medicean) in the open 1600m contest on the day, with the last start Tauranga winner at his best with some give in the ground. Vance has fashioned a useful record with the eight-year-old since he made his way to New Zealand after winning three times in Europe and twice more in Hong Kong. Royal Performer kicked off his…
Tyler duo refreshed ahead of Trentham assignments
Fully recovered from a gruelling float trip from Southland, don’t be surprised if stablemates Dr Velocious (NZ) (Haradasun) and Tobilicious (NZ) (Natural Destiny) improve on their first-day performances when they contest the big prizes at Trentham on Saturday. Dr Velocious and Tobilicious, from the stable of Kelvin and Aimee Tyler, had less than two days to recover from a 22-hour float trip from Riverton to Trentham when they ran at the Wellington track on January 16, so they could be excused if they didn’t run brilliantly. But with a further…
Wellington Cup favourite ready for two-mile mission
A day out from the running of the Gr.3 NZ Campus of Innovation & Sport Wellington Cup (3200m) trainer Allan Sharrock is itching to get the show on the road. Sharrock prepares the likely race favourite Waisake (NZ) (Zed) who completed a sparkling final gallop on Tuesday, followed by another impressive light workout on Thursday that has Sharrock confident he has his charge at his peak for his first two-mile assignment. “He did his last bit of work on Thursday morning and he is going super,” Sharrock said. “He worked…
Nairn Full Of Hope
By Joshua Smith, Harness News Desk Paul Nairn will be doing something at Addington Raceway on Friday that he rarely does these days, hope in the sulky. The trotting maestro has had just 15 raceday drives in the last two seasons, with nearly all of those in his own colours, however, on Friday he will don Regan Todd’s blue and gold silks when he drives Full Of Hope in the SBSR Supported By Harnesslink Trot (2600m). Nairn trained the mare to one victory from four starts before she transferred to…

Revitalised by a brief spell, emerging talent Columbus County (NZ) (Redwood) will throw down the gauntlet to Hong Kong’s premier stayers in the G3 Centenary Vase Handicap (1800m) at Sha Tin on Sunday as Caspar Fownes plots an ambitious path. Freshened since a brave third to Ireland’s Mogul in the G1 LONGINES Hong Kong Vase (2400m) on 13 December, Columbus County will face a select group of rivals on Sunday, including the Tony Cruz triumvirate of Exultant, Furore and Time Warp. While Fownes expects the five-year-old to benefit from the…
Expectations Smashed in New Era of Selling
New Zealand Bloodstock’s 95th National Yearling Sale Series exceeded all expectations after a buoyant atmosphere continued to play out in the final session of Book 2. The market remained competitive throughout the last session, with key sale indicators tracking well ahead of last year’s final figures. After the final lot went under the hammer, 212 lots sold for a total turnover of $8,853,500. The average soared to $41,759 from $35,012 while the median closed at $30,000 from $25,000 and the clearance rate reached 76%. NZB’s Managing Director Andrew Seabrook was ecstatic…
Ardsley Stud play key role in bumper day at Karaka
Wairarapa’s Ardsley Stud enjoyed a red-letter day at Karaka on Thursday as they produced two memorable pieces of magic in the auction ring. Principal Jim Wallace had been expecting good things from their thirteen-strong draft over the Book 1 & 2 sessions of the National Yearling sale but was staggered by the results on the second day of Book 2 as they produced the equal best price of $150,000 for the Thursday session as well as the fourth best for good measure. Wallace started day two with a bang as…
Unique virtual Karaka experience for Moroney
Paul Moroney has had a unique experience purchasing horses at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale this year. For the first time in nearly four decades the international bloodstock agent wasn’t able to be at Karaka as a result of COVID-19 travel restrictions, but he did not let that stop him from being active at the annual sale. While he wasn’t able to be physically present, he utilised technology to remotely inspect the entire Book 1 and Book 2 catalogue. “It’s a completely new experience as far as Karaka is…
