Last start Gr.3 Eulogy Stakes (1600m) placegetter Signora Nera (NZ) (Sweynesse) will be aimed at further black-type features, but trainer Allan Sharrock said what path the three-year-old filly takes will become a lot clearer after racing at Awapuni on Saturday. The daughter of Sweynesse will jump from barrier two in the Spreading Rural Bulk 1400 and her performance will dictate whether she heads north to contest the Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m) at Ellerslie on January 23, or the Gr.3 New Zealand Bloodstock Desert Gold Stakes (1600m) at Trentham a…

Singh thankful to be back
Central Districts jockey Madan Singh is delighted to be back on New Zealand shores after a holiday which nearly cost him his career. Singh is currently in quarantine in Auckland and can’t wait to return to Fraser Auret’s Marton stable where he will be reunited with friends, in addition to his brother Mahipal. “For…

Smith believes Riding The Wave will be suited by the step-up to 1400m at Flemington. The former Kiwi has had four starts for Smith for an Australian debut fourth for him at Bendigo which was followed by a victory at Ballarat. Riding The Wave has then had two starts at Flemington over 1200m for a second and then a narrow win at…
Palamos withdrawn from Karaka Million
Te Akau Racing has confirmed that Palamos will not take his place in the Double Tree by Hilton Karaka Million 2YO (1200m) at Ellerslie on January 23. Purchased by Te Akau’s David Ellis out of Ainsley Downs Stud’s 2020 New Zealand Bloodstock Book 1 Sale draft for $85,000, Palamos currently tops the Order of Entry for the rich feature with $40,050 in stakes earnings. “Unfortunately a routine veterinary inspection has identified a small issue with the colt,” trainer Jamie Richards said. “While we could continue with his preparation towards the…

Cambridge trainer Lauren Brennan is hoping to put Grand Bouquet’s Gr.3 NZ Campus of Innovation & Sport Wellington Cup (3200m) campaign back on track with a bold run in Saturday’s Listed Japac Homes Marton Cup (2200m) at Awapuni. Bred in the purple by Waikato Stud’s Garry and Mark Chittick, by Savabeel out of Gr.1 Australian Oaks (2400m)-winning mare Daffodil, Grand Bouquet ran home strongly for third in November’s Gr.3 Counties Cup (2100m) at Pukekohe but wasn’t able to replicate the performance in last month’s Gr.3 Waikato Cup (2400m), finishing eighth.…
Former explorer enjoying jockey life
An urge to see the world more than a decade ago was a lifechanging experience for Canterbury jockey Tina Comignaghi. The Argentinian native was backpacking around New Zealand, and like many travellers, decided to get a job in order to replenish her funds. Growing up riding horses, Comignaghi found herself a job working with thoroughbreds and her new employers urged her to look into a career as a jockey because of her diminutive stature. “I was backpacking around New Zealand and I found a job with horses and they told…
