Kembla Grange Classic 2021 preview – Friday, March 12

A field of 11 three-year-old fillies has been assembled for Friday’s Kembla Grange Classic. The Group 3 mile event has been won by some quality horses like Hot Danish, Single Gaze and Luvaluva, and several of these runners will head towards the Vinery Stud Stakes and the ATC Oaks. Elizabeel is the $3.50 favourite ahead of Brookspire and Thermosphere. The speed is going to come from the Waterhouse & Bott pair Vittoriosa and Nothinsweetaboutme, while Darling Diamond can box seat from the inside alley.

Race favourite Elizabeel looks mighty hard to beat after running a career PB in the Surround Stakes last start. Having only run at the mile once when fourth to Peltzer in the Bondi Stakes, she is bred to see out the trip comfortably – being by Power out of a Zabeel mare – and her last run over 1400m suggested that when she was strong through the line. She has drawn out in barrier eight on Friday, but she should be able to stay out of trouble and get every winning chance under Robbie Dolan, who knows the filly well.

Thermosphere is arguably the best horse in this field, but it seems she needs everything to go her way to win races. The daughter of Exosphere has won three of 14, including the Group 2 Edward Manifold at Flemington where she was wide throughout over the 1600m, so the drop back to Group 3 from some tricky Group 1 and high benchmark races should suit. Barrier 10 with Rachel King should work for the Godolphin filly, as should the spacious Kembla track, as she is a big strider who needs plenty of racing room. If it rains, she could be promoted to our top pick.

Vittoriosa can make every post a winner and be in this for a very long way under Brenton Avdulla. The Vancouver filly is likely to be the pacemaker in this race from barrier three as she looks to notch her second win in just three starts, after leading all of the way on debut before being run down late by War Baron at Hawkesbury in her next go. With very little speed in this race, she will roll along in front and can add some value to the exotics.
