Manawatu to host Taranaki Cup tonight
By Dave Di Somma, Harness News Desk The Taranaki Trotting Cup ultimately wants to run meetings on its home patch, but for the meantime is pleased that it can still run key races at Manawatu. Tonight the $12,000 Revital Fertilisers Taranaki Cup and the $11,000 Woodlands Stud Taranaki Breeders Stakes will be run at Palmerston North, after the area wasn’t allocated any dates for the 2020-21 season. “It’s not ideal because it’s three hours away but it’s better than not running anything,” says Taranaki Racing chief executive Carey Hobbs, “we…
Voyage Warrior looks to fulfill potential
Ricky Yiu heads to Sunday’s LONGINES Hong Kong International Races with a three-pronged assault across the four-race HK$95 million showcase spearheaded by Voyage Warrior (Declaration of War), who will look to secure his trainer a fourth Gr.1 LONGINES Hong Kong Sprint (1200m) success. Yiu is the most successful trainer in the Sprint with three wins, thanks to Fairy King Prawn (1999) and Sacred Kingdom (2007 and 2009) and this weekend Voyage Warrior will look to fulfill his prodigious potential with a win in the HK$22 million sprint. The talented chestnut…
Dark Alley has bright future
Local trainers Guy Lowry and Grant Cullen produced a smart 1200m maiden winner in Dark Alley (NZ) (Per Incanto) at the Hawke’s Bay meeting on Wednesday. The four-year-old son of Per Incanto covered plenty of ground after drawing barrier 14, but won with a bit in hand under Craig Grylls. The gelding won at Taupo trials last month, more than a year after his previous trial success. “I rode him at the Taupo trials and he gave me a great feel that day,” Grylls said. “He didn’t have the best…

Join hosts Greg O’Connor and Michael Guerin for this week’s edition of all things harness racing in The Box Seat.
Magical “Mumma” Mandy
Photo. Left to Right: Paige Hodge with Indie (Unwanted Lady) and Xanda Lockwood with Freckles (Lady Freckles) both greyhounds belonged to Mandy. Mandy “Mumma” Shaw would be smiling down from heaven with pride. The much-loved Mandy passed away on September 27 – only four weeks short of her 55th birthday – after a battle with liver cancer. But equally as proud is her partner of 14 years, Glenn Campbell, after the Ballarat GRC created a memorial series in her honour. Base at Anakie, Campbell was so touched by the club’s…
‘Avocado’ takes the ‘chequered flag’
Daniel Avocado – named after happy-go-lucky Aussie F1 hero Daniel Ricciardo – was in the ‘fast lane’ in tonight’s Group 2 BFC Ballarat Cup heats (450m). Trained by Jason Sharp, Daniel Avocado pushed ‘pedal to the metal’ and took the ‘chequered flag’ as the fastest heat winner. Contesting Heat 3, Daniel Avocado ($11.70) defeated Dream Wizard ($8.10) by 1.33L, with Ballarat 450m track record holder Pirate Pete ($2.30F) a further 1.34L away third in 25.16sec. It was his 16th win from 45 starts. But he nearly lost ‘pole position’ to…
Sure Will Do aiming for hattrick
New Zealand-bred gelding Sure Will Do will put his unbeated record on the line when he lines up in a 1200m event in Singapore on Saturday. The Stephen Gray-trained son of Per Incanto posted a winning debut over 1200m in October, backing it up with a win over the same distance last month when he demolished his rivals by drawing clear to gap them by 2 ¾ lengths. “This horse has kept stepping up,” Gray said. “He impressed me with his last win, when he carried his weight in a…
Inferno out of Hong Kong feature
Inferno has been ruled out of Sunday’s Gr.1 LONGINES Hong Kong Sprint (1200m). The son of Holy Roman Emperor, who was one of three overseas runners in the Group One feature, failed the vet check on Tuesday when he was found to be lame in his left front leg. A graduate of Westbury Stud’s 2018 New Zealand Bloodstock Book 1 draft, Inferno has been in red hot form in Singapore, winning his last four starts including the Lion City Cup (1200m) and Singapore Guineas (1600m). “It’s unfortunate that Singapore looks…
Bell hoping history repeats for Julius
High-class nine-year-old Julius will present in excellent order in Saturday’s Gr.3 J Swap Sprint (1400m) at Te Rapa where he will shoulder 60.5kgs. The injury-plagued sprinter is following a similar path to last year, where he finished fourth in the Listed Counties Bowl (1100m) before going on to win the J Swap Sprint followed by the Gr.1 Railway (1200m). “He is very well and has worked up quite superbly,” trainer John Bell said. “Last year he ran fourth at Counties, then he won this and went on to Group One…
