Gisborne trainer Mick Gardner was quick to divert the credit for his first success at Woodville on Thursday to prominent Hastings horsemen Paul Nelson. Gardner (65), who has the distinction of being the only trainer on the Makaraka racecourse, prepared Nedwin to rock punters to the tune of $59.70 when racing away to a two and three-quarter-length win over 1600m in the hands of Jonathan Riddell. Nedwin was having his seventh start with his best result being a fifth of eight at Wairoa last February before Gardner obtained his owner-trainer’s…

Last hurrah for Magnum
Consistent sprinter Magnum will kick-off what will likely be his last preparation at Ellerslie on Saturday. The Lauren Brennan-trained gelding will carry topweight of 59kg in the Otakiri Reserve 1400 with leading hoop Opie Bosson aboard. The track was rated a Dead4 on Friday morning, which Brennan said would suit her charge. “I am very happy with him,” she said. “He may need the run. He has had the one trial leading into it, but the firmer track and heavier weight should be okay for him. “I was worried if…
Ladies First returns
After 18 months on the sidelines, 2018 Gr.1 Auckland Cup (3200m) winner Ladies First (NZ) (Dylan Thomas) will make her raceday return at her home track on Saturday. The eight-year-old will line-up in the Gr.3 NZB Ready To Run Sale Trainers Series (1400m) at New Plymouth Raceway, but trainer Allan Sharrock isn’t expecting a lot from his charge first-up after such a long break. “She did a pastern and she spent 18 months away. The vet cleared her six months ago,” Sharrock said. “We are just using it as a…

Pre-election win for Racing Minister
By Jonny Turner The equine version of Racing Minister led the way for his political namesake when scoring an overdue and deserved win at Winton on Thursday. Trainer Doug McLachlan’s Racing Minister did exactly what Winston Peters is trying to achieve on the campaign trail leading in to this year’s national election – fight hard and win. Though there is one fundamental difference between the two Racing Ministers’ races – the harness racing version ran his race effectively came under the to the country’s previous politician system – a first…
