Stuart Kendrick records 900th career win
Stuart Kendrick has trained his 900th winner with Superare successful at the Sunshine Coast. Caloundra trainer Stuart Kendrick wondered where the years had gone after he celebrated winning his 900th race. It was apt Kendrick reached the milestone at the Sunshine Coast because he has been the premier trainer at the beachside track for the past seven seasons. His gelding Superare ($5) scored an impressive win in the Butler McDermott Lawyers Handicap at his second race start. Kendrick started his career in Mackay as a 19-year-old when he took out…
September Run breaks maiden at Canterbury
After being tested in Group company earlier this year, two-year-old filly September Run has begun her latest campaign with a narrow win at Canterbury that star jockey Hugh Bowman believes had plenty of merit. A $380,000 yearling purchase for Hermitage Thoroughbreds, September Run was unplaced in the Inglis Nursery in December before running fourth in the Group Three Widden Stakes won by Away Game. Returning from a spell in Wednesday’s Iron Jack Handicap (1200m) for two-year-old fillies, the Chris Waller-trained September Run was in behind a wall of horses before…
Danny O’Brien lands his first Bool feature
Order Of Command continues to build on his stakes record, winning the Listed Wangoom Handicap. Order Of Command has added another stakes victory to his record with a fighting win in the Wangoom Handicap at Warrnambool. The Danny O’Brien-trained sprinter, under the urgings of Damien Oliver, fought back after being headed in the straight to claim Wednesday’s 1200m Listed race. To add merit to the victory, while allowing for a rise in the minimum weight due to coronavirus, Order Of Command lumped 62kg to victory, 3.5kg more than Storm Lover…

Too Close the Sun has won the Warrnambool Cup, giving trainer Lindsey Smith a treble at the meeting. The traditional three-day carnival was cut to two this year because of coronavirus with an all-jumps program on Tuesday followed by Wednesday’s all-Flat meeting. Smith did not have a runner on Tuesday but produced a winning treble on day two, including…

In-form Greyworm is an early favourite to win the Listed Takeover Target Stakes at Randwick. Changes to Vic jumps and highweight races
Racing Victoria has announced amendments to its coronavirus protocols that keeps different riding groups separated. RV has separate groups for jockeys that ride in jumps and highweight races. With the Casterton and Coleraine race clubs unable to appropriately segregate jumps and Flat jockeys, RV has decided to make programming changes. The Casterton Cup meeting on May 17 will become an all-Flat fixture. The meeting at Casterton on June 27 now becomes a day for jumps riders only with a fourth jumps race added and the three Flat races converted to…
Exciting filly sets tongues wagging at Cambridge Stud
Ill-fated Cambridge Stud stallion Tavistock sired his first Oaks winner on Saturday. Photo: Trish Dunell It was an emotional day on Saturday for the team at Cambridge Stud. The prestigious thoroughbred nursery went through a tumultuous few months last year when losing three stallions, including flagbearer Tavistock, but they had something to cheer about on the weekend when celebrating his first Oaks winner. His daughter Toffee Tongue (NZ) went close when finishing runner-up in the Gr.1 Australian Oaks (2400m), but she was not to be outdone on Saturday when taking…

The Black Leopard winning at Sandown. Photo: Pat Scala/Racing Photos Group One winning trainer Henry Dwyer has fond memories of the Warrnambool Carnival and he is hoping to conjure some more when Kiwi import The Black Leopard (NZ) (Ekraar) contests one of Wednesday’s features, the Listed Warrnambool Cup (2350m). A young Dwyer would often follow his late father Mick on the annual pilgrimage to the ‘bool and watched as his father enjoyed one of his most satisfying moments just weeks before he died. “As kids we grew up going down…
Dwyer’s punt pays off
Riding High on his way to winning at Warrnambool on Tuesday. Photo: Natasha Morello/Racing Photos It’s always great when a plan comes to fruition, especially one that was made six months ago. New Zealand has been a great supplier of quality horses for Victorian trainer Henry Dwyer and last November he once again identified a horse he thought had plenty of promise for Australia’s jumping scene. Riding High (NZ) was a two-win son of under-rated stallion Raise The Flag and Dwyer believed the gelding would suit a jumping career across…
