Sugar Boom has had a setback but Tony Gollan still has four chances in the 3YO race at Eagle Farm. The depth of trainer Tony Gollan’s three-year-old ranks is again emphasised as he prepares four runners for the Ascot Green Handicap at Eagle Farm. The three-year-old races in Brisbane have been competitive in the off-season and Saturday’s Ascot Green (1000m) is no different. Gollan accepted with Le Palmier, Air Spirit, The Move and Leadership Spill. He also nominated stakes-winning filly Sugar Boom for the Ascot Green but did not accept…

BHA formulating plans for assistance
The British Horseracing Authority is formulating a plan for financial assistance to participants with the closure of racing. BHA chief executive Nick Rust has promised the sport “will not be beaten” by the shutdown which has been instituted during the coronavirus pandemic. Rust’s reassurance came in a BHA progress report on the response of a racing industry steering group to the crisis which has forced the government into urgent measures to mitigate the spread of the virus and resulted in the cancellation of thousands sports and entertainment events around the…
Amazing Star moves Purton to within two
Amazing Star (NZ) (Darci Brahma) put a mishap in the gates behind him last month with an impressive win in Wednesday’s Class 2 Begonia Handicap (1200m) at Happy Valley, securing Hong Kong’s champion jockey Zac Purton a double and his sixth win from the last two race meetings. The brace moved him to within two wins of championship leader, Joao Moreira, who remained on 87 wins after drawing a blank. “There were some very fast horses in that race and I drew wide, so I expected them to make me…
Savabeel nears Milestone
Savabeel (Zabeel) took another major step towards the milestone of 100 individual stakes winners on Saturday, with the success of the Lindsey Smith-trained Adelaide Ace in the Gr.2 Autumn Classic at Caulfield. Adelaide Ace represented the sire’s 98th individual stakes winner. Interestingly, this tracks almost identically to Savabeel’s own sire Zabeel, who at the same stage counted 99 individual stakes winners.
Shark the best yet for breeder
Waikato breeder Darrell Hollinshead is the first to admit that his family have been spoilt with good horses over the years, but even he now agrees that the family’s latest star Te Akau Shark (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle) is pretty special. “Over the years we have had some good horses starting with Dad having Judena, then Bak da Chief, and more recently Pondarosa Miss and Ecuador,” Hollinshead said. “But I think this one is extra good.” Te Akau Shark was having his 12th start when he won Saturday’s Gr.1 Chipping…

Mates over the moon with Melbourne result
Two young breeders pulled off a dream result when their yearling went under the hammer in Australia earlier this month. David Morris and Jason Thomasen headed to the Inglis Melbourne Yearling Sale knowing they had a nice filly on their hands but were not expecting her to be so hotly pursued in the sales ring. The 24-year-olds bred Lot 208, a filly from the first crop of Windsor Park Stud’s Turn Me Loose out of Elusive City mare Herculaneum. After a fierce bidding duel she was knocked down to Victorian…
